Only Runs Properly When Left Exhaust Backfires Intermittently

I'm a new guy on the forum and I apologize for the super un-original avitar and name.
I've been using the tech section A LOT!!! But it's time to ask a question about an isue I'm having.

I took off my carbs and adjusted float height, 22mm from gasket surface as per tech section, to correct a fuel overflow problem I was having from my right carb. After this, the leaking stopped and the bike idles just fine. The only problem is that it cuts out when I give it throttle...but this only happens sometimes... The bike will rev to about 1500, make a series of "pfffff-pffffff" fart like noises out of the carbs, then cut out.

Today, it backfired out of the left exhaust every few strokes and would rev fine through the RPM range. It raced a bit when I started it (3000-3500 RPM) and I backed the idle screw off to lower it to normal. I took it out for half a mile, my first ride ever :D , and then it cut out. :banghead: I started it right up and the fart issue happened every time I gave it gas. This happened for about ten minutes, then the backfire came back and I took off for home. I made it back just in time to let the revs drop and the bike cut off again in the garage.

I am assuming the mixture is too lean or it is being starved entirely because the bike only runs when it backfires (extra fuel combusting in the exhaust) meaning there is plenty of fuel...I just want a hint as to what to adjust, float level or mixture screw? I still have the vacuum petcock and I am running pod filters.

Poorly idling bike, looked into the carbs and they were dirty so I got some rebuild kits from Mikes and rebuilt them. Now both carbs are overflowing within 2 seconds of turning on the gas. When I first took off the bowl to see what was up, the bowl was dry....floats are intact flange is set at 25mm. I can blow air thru the fuel line into the bowl provided. I plug the overflow tube so I know the valve is not blocked...now the bowl is getting some gas, but I don't think these carbs should overflow like this...

Background:

A few years ago I bought a basket case 77 XS650 bobber. We had a baby and the project got put on hold. I recently started working on it again. I have never heard or seen the bike running. I purchased all the parts for a PMA swap, a PamcoPete ignition, a sparx capacitor and a coil from MikesXS. I do not have a battery at this point but I do have access to borrow a 12 volt battery from a friend for testing purposes.

Question:

Can I just go straight to installing the Pamco and PMA before starting it?

I've got (work) access to some high-grade granite Starrett Surface Plates to check my cylinder head for any warpage or un-flatness :)

Do I need to use something so accurate or is using a precision straightedge and feeler gauges at several locations generally adequate?

Or even using plate glass to check for any rocking?

Perhaps a silly question, but does the top of the cylinder block also need to be checked as well or just the cylinder head?

Thanks.

Okay, so I picked up a 1978 model XS650 about two weeks ago. It was running (rough, I've been told) last fall, and then was stored under a tarp outside all winter, due to too-many-project syndrome on the part of the former owner. The bike is complete, and looks in pretty good shape, but so far, after much lurking and usage of the search function, I can't get spark. Here's what I've done:

1. Cleaned the carbs. Not an electrical troubleshooting step, I know, but they needed it, so I did it. Twice.
2. Replaced the battery. The old one had frozen solid, and the cells were obviously low. Couldn't hold a charge. So I ordered a new one from Mike's XS, and charged it up with my AGM-safe trickle charger.
3. Cleaned and regapped the points. Great write-up on this site, thank you.
4. Tested the engine kill switch. It's working as required.
5. Checked all my fuses. One of the POs replaced the fuse block with individual fuses - they all check out, and as I said, the bike was running with the replacement fuses last fall (as in, the wiring to replace the block is not currently under suspicion.)
6. Checked the plug wires and boots. They work and have resistance as required.
7. Coils... well, I've tried to test them. They seem to be working as required, as in either they're both blown, or they're both fine. I have to admit, the instructions I've found here to check coils are a little confusing. As far as I can tell, there are really only three connections to them - two small wires that attach to the harness, and the plug wire. There is infinite resistance between the two small wires, and I'd have to recheck, but there's some resistance (but not infinite) between the plug boots and the small wires.

And that's it. I'm not sure where to go next. With an engine not running (although my started does work) I'm not sure what's the next likely culprit. I'm willing to bet it will be a common connection for both cylinders, as the bike was running less than a year ago.

Any suggestions? Please help. The suggestion that gets my bike running wins at least a pint of beer.

Good afternoon citizens of the internet! I come to you as the owner of a new (to me) 1978 XS650, with impeccably clean carbs, and no spark. But I'll start another thread about that.

I'm a regular on the XS400.com board with my 1983 DOHC Maxim project. That project stalled the moment baby #2 was born, and now, almost a year later, it's just getting started up again.

But I needed a bike to ride, as we start in on the riding season up here in Canada. A friend had too many projects and not enough time, so I was able to pick up a complete, running-as-of-last-September-but-stored-outside-under-a-tarp-through-a-very-snowy-winter XS650.

The goal is to get it running as quickly as possible, then complete the XS400. Then, likely, play more with the 650.

I'm hoping ya'll don't mind if I ask a ton of questions, and post a bunch of pictures. Nothing yet - need to make some space in the garage so I can stand more than 2 feet away, but soon!

Aaron (Bentwrench, in honour of all the tools I've broken.)

Guy's forgive me if there is a thread already on here but I just can't seem to find the answer I am looking for. I have eliminated the stock harness and wired the bike up and everything is working great but I would like to add in a 12V normally closed relay to act as a starter cut-off relay and don't want to use the original bulky SR/LR unit from the stock '77 set-up. I tired a couple of generic relays but the 6V from the PMA is not enough voltage to energize the coil to open the circuit from the start button. Does anyone know of a cheap generic NC relay that works? I would eliminate the relay but when I let go of the start button it doesn't stop the ground to the starter solenoid fast enough and the starter continues turning for a second after the engine starts.

Thanks
Dave

After retorqueing all 8 big nuts to 30, the RHS back corner of the cylinder base is still sweating when driving. :( Doesn't leak when hot and idling. It's not really a big issue, but it's annoys me. An engine should not leak!

Have anyone experienced that a thicker oil have been a solution to similar problem? I'm thinking about changing from the motorcycle 15w/40 i'm using now to a 20w/50.

And would it be okej with a standard mineral 20w/50 oil, sold for cars and/or older worn engines? Where i nomrally buy the oil, they don't have it sepcifically for motorcycles.

Or what about just SAE 50 for older motorcycles, since I only use it during late spring and summer (15-30 degrees celsius)?

Thanks

Guys,

Here where I am I have access to 95RON, 98RON or 10% ETHANOL 91RON - All unleaded.
So, what have you guys found works best in our XS's ?
Someone told me to put 91RON or 95RON in instead of the 98 I have been running.
Their logic is that 98 wasnt around when the bike was made... BUT then again, LEADED was...
Do any of you put any additives in (lead replacement type stuff) or anything?

Why? Mainly to ensure its running as good as it can.
My experience with my classic cars heavily modified was that I used to be able to bump up the advance, get it running REALLY well, and was using 98RON to ensure no pre-det... however that was using mapped ECU for the advance. I am moving to the PAMCO + E-Advance setup and believe that it will help... however in my past I had access to an engine dyno and could play with pipes, fuel, timing, everything for hours on end for free and could tune to my hearts content... with the bike I dont have that ability so starting with fuel and going from there.

Any one had an experience in tuning every scrap out of these? OBVIOUSLY doing the basics are first, but past that in terms of tweaks, tips, tricks... is where I am headed.
Will go down the porting route, etc later... for now its just the tune tricks, etc.

For example, I had a 1976 Leyland Mini - 1132cc turbo that I built.
It was running Ford EDIS module and MegaJolt ignition system (so a VR sensor on the harmonic balancer with a 36-1 tooth wheel... )
Now, it made 400% more power than the stock motor, ran a 13sec quarter mile on the stock tyres... with wheelspin in most gears. The diff ratio's gave me great 60' times but lost in top end due to the 4 speed box (there was a billet quaife LSD and dog box setup)

Now, that thing was great, but to my surprise when I was playing with it, adding Molybond 2.5 to the oil (BEFORE it went into motor) and shaken up, then put into motor gave me 7% more power on the dyno! that had to do with the zinc content in oils these days and the pushrod motor needing zinc for less friction.

Another one that the officials and scrutineers didnt like was in the 998cc class... we used to throw 2 stroke into the fuel... it simply helped the motor rev and keep up with the V8s a bit more down the straight... the only way it could be seen after the race was because there was black oil on the firewall that used to spit back out of the carb! haha...

Anyway, I know I cant add molybond 2.5 to my bike, but any old school things like that - tips tricks and ideas... would be awesome.
There has to be an old school XS650 racer among the crowd...

Cheers,
Peter

Hi all, I have searched and didn't find a answer to my question below. But I NEED HELP!
: )

I recently got a 1980 xs650 special (i absolutely love this thing) and Random times at Idol usually when warm the idol will increase out of nowhere. (It will keep increasing till it blew up if I let it)
If I am driving it and pull in the clutch the idol seems to start increasing also. If I come to a stop with the clutch in sometimes the idol will start revving to the point I either have to let the clutch out to bring the rev's down, or turn off the ignition to it does't explode!

Its hard for me to think its the carbs because when it does it, I can let out the clutch to bring the rpm's down and then they stay down. If I give it a little gas, it will usually start climbing up and up and UP!

i have sync'd the carbs, got new carb boots, cleaned the carbs.
I have also had a guy that works on older bikes look at it and it seems to be a mystery.

Any info would greatly be appreciated!!:banghead:

Thanks,
James

I have a "DEAL" offered to me. This guy is getting a 1980 XS1100. He hasn't seen it yet. All he knows is "One of the carb's is leaking gas".

So he has a compressor I want. He's out on the road at the moment (truck driver) so he can't remember the exact specific's of it. He will find out Saturday. It's either a 60 or 80 gal vertical tank, 220v. He says it won't build pressure.

I could buy the thing out right for $50, then spend another $50 in gas, or more since it's 100 mile's away, to go get it. Or he says he will bring me the compressor and the bike, and give me the compressor if I clean and adjust the carb's.

I told him all though I've done all my own stuff, I am far from a carb guy, and don't know that I would trust my self to get paid, so to speak to work on someone elses stuff.

From what I can tell, the carb's are BS34 II's. There is 4 of them that are linked together. I did a similar 4 set on my 82 650 G Suzuki. They turned out great.

The more I think about it, that's a lot of work for let's just call it $100. But I'm basically broke all the time, and don't ever have enough cash to buy a compressor. I'm the kind of guy that has more time than money. I'm hoping I could just fix the pump on the compressor, but won't know until I get it. I can get a new pump from Harbor Freight $150 for a 3HP, or $185 for a 5 HP. Plus you can use a 20% off coupon.

Would you guy's rebuild his carb's, or just buy the compressor out right.

Also. Do you guy's know of any good XS1100 forum's. Thanks.
