Metal Rescue...it is AWSOME!

If you are planning on storing a gas tank for a while after de-rusting, we have heard good results from customers with using Dry Coat. Its a non sticky, fast drying rust preventative. It works great if you pour a little in the tank and splash it around, it can keep it from rusting on the shelf for up to two years.

If I am planning on NOT storing my tank but putting it back on the bike is there any further processing or coating required? Will it slowly rust again or will the gas prevent that?

Can the solution be re-used? Filter out the crud and use it again?

Here in Seattle Metal Rescue is available from Home Depot but only in 1 quart size for $12.48. A 5 gal container is available for $89.98 but only by ordering online. Free shipping, according the web page. 5 gal in quarts would be $249.60 (plus 10% tax here in Seattle). An amazing price difference.

No, there shouldn't be any other steps need just fill with gas after rinsing. The solution can be reused to a point, when the Metal Rescue turns black in color it has taken in as much rust as it can hold. However for small projects that have little rust, the product can be drained back into the container through a coffee filter. What size are you looking to use for your next project?

Excellent.

Good.

I have two tanks to do and both are in bad shape. I thought I would build a holding tank that I could completely submerge the tanks in. The 5 gallon pail should do fine.

Thanks for the info.

I have a variety of rust/corrosion issues, most not motorcycle related, so I'll be watching this thread.

Have a friend in town who owns a small repair shop, been asking me about rust removal, I'll pass your info on Metal Rescue on to him.

Thanks man, we always like to see referrals, here is another link to one of our how-to videos with Brian Fuller.

I used 2 Gallons of Metal Rescue to de-rust my fuel tank and fuel cap. Worked as advertised!

For the tank I put some screws/bolts in and shook it up to get rid of any flakes. Then blasted it out with the garden hose until no more flakes came out.

Taped off the Petcock locations. Poured 1.9 Gallons into the tank and rotated every 8 hours. 48 hours later opened it up to amazing results. Probably 98.5% cleaned. Couldn't be happier.

For the fuel cap I poured 0.1 Gallons into a little container and left the fuel cap parts in there. Completely clean in 16 hours.

After the treatment I hosed all parts off with the garden hose after removing the Metal Rescue / removing from the bath. Made sure to really get the tank pristine. Fuel cap parts could be dried off by hand towel.

For the tank I dumped in a medium sized bottle of 91% Isopropyl alcohol and swished it around. This was to remove any extra water to dry the tank out 100%. Dump the Isopropyl, blow out with a hose until all the alcohol was evaporated.

Then I hit the tank inside with a blast of Sta-bil fogging oil. The fuel cap parts got a quick blast too.

Couldn't be happier. Pictures!
