81 XS650 Brat Build -- First Time Builder *Update VI Kit Installed*

Hi all,

I thought I would start a build thread, as I am sure I am going to need quite a bit of help from you all here, and I figured it would be easier to organise everything into one thread, and reference it from here.

Ill start with some pics:

Picking it up in my mates Datsun Truck. Just lifted it on the back. Nice and easy. lol

How it sat when I picked it up:

On the jack, ready for tear down:

Has Boyer Branson Ignition:

Already has a sweet marine grade fuse panel:

Finally got the custom battery/electrical box out of the way:

This is how it currently sits:

I am going to order a bunch of shit from Visual Impact/TCBros/LowBrow. For now, I am going with the VI brat seat kit, burly slammers, 3" fork lowering, 12" apes, LED headlight, tailight, indicators, tiny battery and kick only.

Once I have the cash, I will upgrade to a PMA as well.

Anyway, thats the plan, lets see how I can go. lol.

Like I said, this is my first build, happening in my condo underground garage. Hopefully I can get the thing up and running in the next 6 weeks or so.

A bit of a shitty update, but here are some mockup pics:

Rear suspension mock up - Sat at a 10" rear shock height (front still needs about an extra 1-1.5" drop):

Where I am hoping the new seat rails will sit once my VI brat kit arrives:

Once my shocks and VI brat kit arrives, and I can install them, I will update more.

Looking forward to getting it all, and installing it on the bike.

I think it should give it quite a sweet stance. Maybe a bit low, but we will see.

They aren't burlys, they are just 10" shocks I bought on ebay. Time will tell if they are any good. I dont really care too much, as long as they bridge the gap from the swingarm to the seat, i'm happy ;) I just don't want to go full hardtail yet.

VI kit looks good, well constructed.

Yeah man, the datsun truck is awesome, so easy to haul bikes. You can just pick them up and put them in the back. lol

Here are some more updated pics:

Im cutting and welding the frame on Sunday, so hopefully I should have some more updates after that.

Cut and fabbed up the VI brat kit today with my mate. Well, he did most of the hard work, I just cracked the beers. :)

We did all this in the workshop/craft room of my condo building. Had to deal with one nosey fucker, but all went well in the end.

Still got to play around with the seat position, I think I want it to sit further back, so the back of the seat follows the same curve of the frame.

Next I have to decide on the fender mounting, and get the new tank in and then painted.

Finally starting to come along nicely. Getting the big, harder stuff out of the way a bit at a time.

Been away getting married, so no real updates.

Got some free parts, ready to be fabbed, media blasted and put on.

Going to cut the fatbob fender before it goes on. Just chucked it on to see if it fit between the frame. Seems like a good fit.

looks good Ryan !

is it done ?

Hey Mike! So damn close. Going down to my garage right now to do some work. Got it running last Friday, second kick! lol. Need to figure out something for the pipes, as having just the headers end so close to me is going to be annoying.

Was going to run a few ideas by you to see what you thought about an idea I had for my exhaust.

Serious Datsun envy. Damn, great truck. Bike is looking good too.

Cheers, Datsun is my mates, mine is the slammed 72 C10 in the later pics. The datsun 510 is another friends of mine, it has a 13B rotary in it.
