I have a 73 XS that I have been working on for a year. It will run but it will occasionally backfire through the carbs. I have reversed the coil wires but then it will not fire at all. Switch back to original positions and it start right up but still backfiring through the carb.

Maybe related....I am getting air flow out of the two tubes (breathing tubes?) just above the carbs on top of the engine. I thought these were intake but notice air pressure exiting the tubes?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

start here http://www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf found in xs650 tech section http://www.xs650.com/tech.php the breather tubes are just that (crankcase ventilation) normal to puff a little air, the stock ignition system is nothing to write home about on the XS/TX650's 73 was a TX650 74 TX650A if you have original coils and condensers they can mimic carb problems... sync your carbs and then go from there

THX....I am reading the carb guide now. I do not know what the PO x2 did to this bike. I bought the pair 73 and 76 in a storage unit auction for $500. The 73 had the title in an envelope under the seat. So far the carbs appear to be off the 1976, I don't know about the ignition system components. They were both pretty parted together when I started.

Can the breather tubes pull air in and if so should I filter them?

Thanks again...

Yes, put a filter on them. It's not uncommon to add a power brake check valve to the vent hoses to keep some negititive pressure in the crankcase to lessen oil leaks.
