Paint code

- yamaha dont make that info available as far as i know...your best bet is to find a paint shop with a spectrometer and take them a clean unweathered sample to analyse...this will give them a recipe...the match may not be exact but will be very close

- check a dried sample before buying

This is great information - BUT - can anyone relate these paint codes to model years?

For example, I’m keen to know which one ps are:

- the 1976 red

- the 1978 dark green

????

without going to my charts.......Memory or Alzheimer...

78.........Spruce green metalic

76 .........Brilliant red

You inquired about the green..........here is the 73TX750 Aussie colour green...........Personally i like this colour, almost British racing green...........Just for interest sake

Think it would look nice with 75B or 76C decals

Doug,
I quite agree, I think that deep green metallic with the gold and black trim is one of the most attractive paint jobs I’ve ever seen on a bike. And thanks for posting those links, that last one had a very nice write up about a restored TX750. Ive always been attracted to bikes you don’t see them every day ( or at all for that matter ) and I always thought if you could find one of the later year models that had the factory alterations to address the early model problems, they would make for a fine and very rare classic bike. Not to mention that a friend of mine , when I was young, bought the first year model with the gold paint job, and I have fond memories of seeing him pull up on that bike.

There are few TX750's out there as they were all low mile grenades.
Yamaha sent out engine kits up until about 77 that contained the crank and just about everything else
in the engine ( at no charge ) . The boxes they came in weighed over 100 lbs. Truly
Yamaha's greatest mechanical disaster !

I’ve got to say, the TX750 motor has a certain visual similarity to the new Royal Enfield 650 vertical twin engine. I really love that Aussie green version that Doug posted. Very classy.

The TX750 share some similarities with the RD350 also, same instrument cluster, indicators, fuel cap, etc. Also similar looking side covers. I suspect Yamaha looked hard at the Honda CB750 cylinder head, as the TX has sort of the same plain look. Totally different from the XS, which looked more like Nortons etc. Period new bike tests actually praised tne TX as a smooth and refined high speed tourer. At least until its inherent flaws came apparent. I still wonder if a sensibly modified TX would be a good useful classic. An exhaust that does not retain all that heat, chain tensioner on the balancer drive chain, crank triggered ignition, and a deeper sump, or even a dry sump conversion.

Most accounts agree that the fixes and 74's were successful, just too late, the model had become a pariah.
Sorry, but loved the Cycle World? epitaph.
The TX750 by Yamaha
Was smooth and slick as a bananaha.
Counter weights revolved hard, on chain by the yard
and oil leaked thither and Yanaha.
