I was using castrol GTX 20-50 and its seem to work good but I was told by XS650 central that it was bad for the clutch . I changed to valvoline motorcycle 4 stroke 20-50 . what is the best oil to use in a xs650 in texas where it is always hot as hell .

hi i always use shell sx4 ,,it used to be 20-50 fortified,,, but shell have now changed it to 10-15-40 as this maintaains the visositcy...... regards oldbiker

I've been running the same GTX 20w50 in all my bikes for years with no clutch problems. Just getting harder to find it in a gallon jug these days...

Are you having problems with the clutch ?

Use 20w-50 motorcycle labled oil. Motorcycle oil is made for a motorcycle (duh) so no bad oil mistakes. If you look on the label you should see an SG rating. This shows the oil has too much ZDDP to achieve the current SM rating.

You can use 10w-40 in winter but my XS likes heavier oil when the temp gets warm. I can hear the engine rattles less with teh heavier oil.

Have been using this for sometime now with no issues.
