Hey all!

Just picked up a new little gem. This is my first xs650 build, and ill say, my first "official post" here. Its my second bike, first was a cute little 03 cbr600 that i did up in a custom flavour, but Im a jeep man.

Sold a moderately built cherokee i had been working on from stock up for the last three years. Sold her for travel and now im back in Canada and have the itch again.

My whole family rides, harley's mostly, and im going to stir the pot a bit.

To the build!

My idea:

A hybrid brat/bobber/tracker bike of my own taste and style. Very simple, to the point, with dashingly good looks and power to boot.

I picked up this 77 partial build last week, and trailered it out to my parents shop, to go hard for a week and see what I can do. The bike is a 77, engines bored to .050 over, NGK plugs, straight exhaust (mean as hell), brand new paint job and resto job on a 73ish tank, custom seat, etc etc. Pics will show you more. The bike didn't really run but with some playing with the carbs, some fuel, and enough kicks to make my leg numb, the bike is now a 1-3ish kicker. Im sure this will only improve as it gets ridden. It has not been ridden for a few years. Now its time to ride the thing like I stole it AKA Its gunna love me.

Onto the pics.

On the first day not only did I get the sucker running and take her for a spin down the street, I also got rid of the current seat and fender and mocked up the new one. The seat will be a real flat thin leather seat on a skateboard seat pan.
It will work for 2 up so me and my chicka can still go for rides, but will keep the good looks. The tail light will be mounted on the rear hoop, signals on the old fender mounts, bullet style, and plate somewhere on the back as well.

Ive got rebel shocks in the mail that should arrive by tues-wed, and am going parts shopping at the local "angels" hangout across from my old mans shop. The owner loves xs650s, and claims he has a bunch of parts I can use. Tron will be getting some 8ish inch z-bars or apes, a small headlight, the rebel shocks, and some pipe wrap.

From there, who knows.

Enjoy the mock up pics,

And heres a quick video of me firing it up for the 2nd time..

And almost falling over at the same time, its new years, gimme a break!
Note the awesome back fire!! Yeew.

It sure "conveniently" happens to cover yamaha, hoping that the p.o. didn't go through that trouble to cover something up..

I'm betting he did go to that trouble to cover up ..............Yamaha.
The drilled brake hub is a new twist to me. I kinda expected the left case to be drilled and the chain fin to be gone when I saw holes in the wheel.

Pretty much done the seat, just need to screw in the rear mount, and right now allowing the leather to stretch before i do the final staples. Its wrapped right now with just about 10 staples holding it down. Once im done, it will be a bit tighter. The material is snake skin-esk genuine leather. This seat cost me nothing. Everything was already around my house. The leather was left over from the recovering of my cbr seat, had the board from my younger days, and the yoga mat was just an extra.

Ill post a how to today.

Heres the finished pictures, mounted pictures to come tomorrow, or tuesday.

Sure is a quiet forum.

Finished seat pics.

Shocks should be arriving any day now, as well as should be grabbing some bars and headlight in the next day or two. Mocked the rear plate mount. From a stock harley road king. Plan is to replace reflector with a LED brake like strip and just run running light/brake light. Signals may get bolted up to the old fender mounts eventually.

Any advice for a leaky right side fuel petcock? If I want to disassemble and flip some gaskets, will I need to drain the tank or anything first?

Upon further inspection, I have no idea what is on my clutch cover. It has an oil line going into it.. Any ideas?

I blew up a couple of the pictures trying to figure out that line. Best guess I can come up with is an oil return line.

What is the other end of the line attached to? It appears to go up between the carbs.

heres some pictures after today. Bike is now ready to ride! My shocks just arrived after a 10 hour day of wrenching. Something ill have to throw on tomorrow or the next day.

Today what I got done:

Rear plate mount, with led brake and running lights. The lights came out great. Really bright, but nice and low profile and low key when not on.

Mounted up 81 sporty headlight with visor, and got it all wired with quick release plugs

Spent about 2 hours dicking around with the rear brake sensor. Finally after a few different springs and experimenting finally got it to work again.

Re mounted the seat a bit more solidly

Mounted some mini apes

Enjoy!

Heres some crappy cell pics of the bike with the rebel shocks

I took the bike for its first ride. She was pissing fuel out the right side petcock, and I had a rag stuffed in there (practically like riding with a grenade between my legs) but it was still fun! I got snowed on on the way back to my shop though. Damn it was cold! I dont think many on here are on the "ridden in the snow" club.

Enjoy.

you need this t-shirt to match the theme of the bike. or some krylon to cover that "art" on your tank. Congrats of the first ride!:)

Quick update,

Lane splitters arrived and are on. Rebuilt both petcocks, tank is primered.

Will lay down first layer of paint tomorrow, but primer went on very nicely.
