Setting Valve Clearances (Confused)

I'm hearing some noise from my '83 Heritage Special...it sounds like it's coming from my valves but I'm not 100% certain.

In my manual it says 0.004 and 0.006 for the valves but I recall reading somewhere (for the life of me I can't recall where) that they should be 0.0024 and 0.006.

So, I set mine as follows:
Intake: 0.0024"
Exhaust: 0.006"

For my own piece of mind can someone confirm my settings or else point me in the direction that I should be looking and referencing?

You are fine with those settings. Yamaha changed the specs several times during production and really for no apparent reason. It's accepted practice to use 3 and 6. If you use 4 on the intakes, they will probably tick.

If the noise is a little more random sounding than valve noise it might be your cam chain is a smidge loose.

Thanks Gary. The cam chain is spot on. Turns out the right side exhaust valve was out of spec. Amazing how 0.001 or 0.002" can make all the difference in the world.
