here is my build thread. this is my second xs650. my first is my daily rider '81 special that has a few bolt-ons, pamco, pma, exhaust, drag bars, rejetted, rebuilt caliper with ss brake line, one-piece clutch pushrod, etc.

i decided to participate in Irish_Prick's buildoff, more or less for the opportunity to meet up with some fellow xs nuts and to have the experience under my belt of building a bike. the buildoff starts officially in november so right now i'm in the breakdown/cleanup stage. by no means am i a fabricator or hard core motor guy but i do have some mechanical ability and tons of passion for this project. not to mention the huge wealth of knowledge that the gurus on this site have to offer helping me along the way. thanks in advance. anyways, enough babble, onto the pics...

donor is a 1983 heritage special. one of those bikes that look good from 20ft away...

still kicking around what kind of look i'm going for. i know i want a lower, more aggressive stance. i want to utilize the rims, i kinda like the bazillion spokes. low sitting tank. mid controls with foot clutch. other than that i'm not quite sure yet. so in the meantime i want to get the engine in tip top shape. considering a rephase, maybe 5th gear overdrive. new pistons, rings, top end refresh.

the infamous front cam chain guide...

so i haven't checked in on this thread basically because there isn't much to show, and we all want to see pics. i've mainly been collecting parts. need to get my ass in gear! but here is where i'm at...

the integrity of the old rims scared me so i got new ones from mikes. also went up 2" each. lacing these heritage rims weren't that bad. first timer! front is now a 21" and rear 18".

did some work on the frame. removed stock gussets. i want to make some new ones and hopefully stuff all my electrical bits up in there. i would also like to run all my wires through the frame if possible.

other than that, just cleaning pieces, removing gouges out of the side covers, etc...

sloooowwwly coming along...

rims and hubs powdercoated. new spokes. 21" front and 18" rear on heritage hubs. not sure on tires. thinking kenda k761 or something like that. skinny front and rear with some knob.

 and there were about a bazillion pics in between. no real issues with reassembly except when i found the breather baffle on the table after i torqued down the head. :banghead:

the roller has come a ways. as for style, it's nothing new. little bit taller and narrow tire/wheel combo. want to keep it clean, kick only. not really a fan of electronic boxes so i'm going to try my best to keep everything concealed as much as possible.

slim seat, p-nut tank, tcbros tail, etc, etc...

one issue i need to address is to figure out where these huge buoys are gonna hang. speaking of which, is there a smaller option for coils for a rephased engine?

still kickin around ideas...

Nice build Deadchef. Hugh recommend I use dynatek 3.0 ohm miniature coils for my rephase build I'm working on now. I've got em ordered but I still have to locate where to put em. Looking forward to your finished product.

Also I dig the starter repurpose. Great idea. Post pics of the process if you don't mind.

This is a really clean and thorough build. Impressive that you have this do it right attitude. Many of us lack the patience.

Hi deadchef,
if you can't hide it, flaunt it!
Weld some mounting stubs on the frame each side and bolt them right there.
Can you get bright green plug wire?

deadchef have a look on fleabay for an accel single fire coil. I have used them on a rephase and they work well. They are basically 2 coils in one package. 3 connections for the primary side (+ - +) and 2 posts for the plugs.

thanks for the compliments! i'm looking into different coil options now.

as for the starter...

the end of the starter protrudes into the engine. i hacked that off. all the internals were gutted except for the bolt/nut for the power. i plan on using it as my positive terminal. negative wire will slip through one of the remaining end cap screw holes and ground directly to the engine. i completely gutted the internals but now i have a few holes to fill. i will probably use jb weld or maybe bondo. then i'll repaint.
