Collected early model data back in the early 2000's. Thought it would be handy to other forum members searching for early model info.
You can look in my albums or use these links:

Good stuff.

Always been curious about how Yamaha changed the compression ratios through the years. Dropped from 8.7 down to 8.1, (obvious as the tech file states), then upped it to 8.4, 8.5 then 8.7 again.

Dragged-out my older computers, found more Service Bulletins. Cleaned them up and overhauled the bulletins album, now has 56 Service Bulletins for the years 1970 thru 1973. Also updated post #1 using 650Skull's and gggGary's link tricks (album id #'s stayed the same, so any older links should still work).

There's bound to be more out there. If you find any, please post any 1970-1973 bulletins that are not in the album.
Also, if you find a bulletin that's significantly crisper/clearer, please post it.

Also found about 30 bulletins for the years 1974 thru 1979. Will be putting them in a separate album, and start a new thread on those...

2many you hereby receive my award of the order of the busted knuckle for services provided to the troops. No one should attempt work on an XS without spending the hour or two needed to read through those service bulletins. I found many of the issues that the board has worked through over the years right there officially from Yamaha! Thanks again!

Needed a place to post this table, so put it in here. It's the best I could come up with, pouring through old parts manuals and service/parts bulletins. There's an awful lot of early model changes that don't seem to have any supporting documentation (13 changes to heads???), and will probably remain as mysteries. Updates, changes, revisions happily encouraged.

(Notes on the very early XS650s, derived from parts manuals and bulletins)

1970 XS1- S650-000101 to S650-006686 = 6586 bikes
1971 XS1B S650-007101 to S650-025383 = 18283 bikes (includes XS1F)
1972 XS2- S650-100101 to S650-133900 = 33800 bikes
1973 TX650 S650-200101 to S650-2?????
1974 TX650A 447-000101 to 447-012250 = 12,150 bikes
