I have always had a long-term fascination with innovative alternative engine designs.
Thanks to a bumper crop of talented CAD designers, the web is full of mesmerizing animations.
Some are almost hypnotic. Enjoy...

Very Cool! I wonder if Coates has gotten anywhere with this stuff...

Ah, yes, the spherical rotary valves.
Their animation won't imbed, so you have to click on these links:

Here's a 100 CuIn Harley with the Coates valve system.

And a recent write-up on this thing:

I love it! Variable-valve, free-valve tech was mostly concept and pipe dream back in the '80s. Was hoping to live long enuff to see this stuff come to fruition...

I took a VW VR6 apart one time. I realized quickly that even if I wanted to I wouldn't be able to bore it because the boring bar I was using referenced off the deck and the cylinders weren't 90 degrees to the deck. Besides, the cylinders may have been Nikasil, I can't remember. Also, how often do you see a 14 degree V6 with one cylinder head? Nuts!

Oh, yeah. As much as I appreciate and admire these innovative designs, there's no way I could afford the exotic tooling to work on them.
