It is the NOAA's way of spelling "trough". It is a low pressure ridge in the upper atmosphere which (as low pressure does) "sucks air upward" and thus causes lifting of air. If the air is moist (in the south by the gulf), that moisture condenses quickly into visible vapor and as it is lifted even higher, it cools to the point of forming water droplets that cannot be suspended in the atmosphere any longer, at which point gravity wins and rain starts. With the fast lifting and rain falling, there is plenty of static electricity buildup and a storm is born.

Let's hear it for the newspelrul, eh? The ebonic was hilarious, "trof" is even better!In our zone, about miles down the valley around Oroville, tornadoes also occur. Not very many...but they happen... Tend to big enough to rip building apart and throw a car into a tree or whatever.

Honestly, I believe that the very shape of the cattle trough was what inspired the weather people while naming the atmospheric phenomenon.

We got 5 inches of rain last night. A town not too far from here got 12 inches.
I mowed the lawn this morning and now it's back to "Pi$$in’ drizzle, cold pi$$in’ drizzle; but without the dollars!" That all said, there is hope for sunshine this coming weekend...
