Finally got it running! My 81 XS Build Thread [Pictures and Video]

What did the 18"come off of? Direct swap? Love the stripped down look, the enduro tires really set it off!

Reminds me alot of this build:

Early XS'S had an 18" wheel, with 'rain catcher' type wheel's. Nice wheel's. Polish up real pretty, and with new spoke's and refinished hub, wow.

^ thanks for the info! Is it the same drum or do you need the drum and axle and everything?

It actually came with a 16" on the rear, I found a guy here on the forum that was looking for an 16" and I traded him straight across for me.

And this bike, was probably my biggest inspiration behind the build, so I'm glad it ended up looking similar :D

Well everybody, I've now joined permanent magnetic alternator club.

My original alternator was never putting out more than 12 volts, so I got on craigslist bought a banshee stator and adjustable timing plate. Also I picked up a lightened flywheel for $60 and after a couple tries I got a working three phase rec/reg from the junkyard.

Read more about it here if you're interested.

Lol, I actually had it locked around the buckle and a spoke, the only thing I could find that the little pad lock I had would fit around.

Nice. Like it a lot. How is that combo speedo/tach working?

You know, it's not working at all actually. I think I had the drive cable coming in at too sharp of angle and it was kind of forcing the back of the gauge down, anyway, it stopped working. So I'm gonna take it somewhere and see what's up. I still haven't gotta a chance to wire up the tach either. More to come...

Very cool looking. What is your left handlebar switch from?

I have no idea what it's off of I'd guess so 70's trail bike? It's metal, which was hard to find. It's got a blinker, a horn and a kill switch on it, which was all I needed.

The idea was to strip down the bars as much as possible. I hate the look of those big plastic housings with the switches. I bought a new throttle body/sleeve so I could get rid of all the switches on the right (don't need a start button, and there's a kill switch on the left). But I guess the one I ordered from Motion Pro wasn't right, I never could find just a straight throttle without any buttons or switches that would work, so I just threw the original back on there. The switches aren't even wired up on the right.

Hey everybody, we just got a break in the rain here in Portland so I ran out and took some pictures, of what I've been working on.

Since I've posted the original picture, I've done some more work, most of it just for ascetics. I did change my clutch springs, and convert to a permanent magnetic alternator. I also found out that my old passenger pegs mount right where I'm guessing the old side planels went.

I got rid of the LED ebay blinkers, which broke instantly and looked stupid. and replaced them with a couple sets from Lockhart Philips, which I think look much better.

I also got another tank on craigslist. My plan was to sand it down and clear-coat it, I was hoping it'd be dent-free...but it wasn't  so I clear coated it anyway.

I'm missing a badge on one side, so if anybody's got an extra one (that matches the left) then I'll gladly buy it....on with the pictures.
