oil temp gauge

i think a pressure gauge would be far more useful. Plus it would double as a temp gauge. Pressure way too high? Oil is cold. Pressure way too low? Oil is very hot.

That being said: if you're that concerned, you probably want to install an oil cooler anyway. then it's easy to fit a temp sensor in there somewhere.

Yeah, easy to do and works great. Just need power to the gauge and drill a hole in the outer cases where the sensor will be in the oil.

i'm not so inclined to drill a hole in the side case, so maybe a dip-stick type is for me.
I read that the oil temps run hot on the xs engines. Can anyone tell me what the oil temp ranges are? Good or preffered oil temp-?;over heated-?; after oil cooler installed-?

I've put the first 200 miles on the bike this spring since i bought it last fall and did all the work to get it back into shape. it running perfect! I appreciate all the advise!

I checked engine temperatures pobably more than anyone has and found that the cylinders is where the real damaging heat is .......hence lower engine longivity that one would like or expect..............and the cylinders cannot be controlled by oil temperatures or coolers.......only by directing more air over the cylinders and lowering the right cylinder temperature.......I stand on the above asumptions after looking and measuring the XS for 10 years.......and a guage won't change what you have ......only mitigation will......xsjohn

thanks xsjohn, did you ever do any add-ons to direct more air to the cylinders? if so, i'd love to see what that might look like.

Also what brand/model of fairing do you have on your bike in your id photo?

Double.....Have no temperature problems anymore....except maybe if I got stuck in traffic.....none of that here thank god.......the fairing is marked Yamaha and came with the bike......smaller that most fairings.....and I like the high windshield because I actually works........mitigations for temp reduction were carb needles R/L....compression lowering slightly to reduce vibes and smooth it out........and the wind directors...top end type oil cooler...maybe the gearing..?...all in all max temps down 35 or so degrees in the summer on the cylinders from stock.........I'm done...........Sorry to post his so much.........I am definately the odd bird on this forum or maybe the opposite..........76 thou and purring.....xsjohn
