Hi guys! New to THIS site, been on others.

Ive had my 80 xs since, hmm, may 05. I took a full degreed welding course,(and passed). In my first quarter, one of the students had a basket case 80 650. Clean title, 50$, im in. I use it for extra credit. and good thing I did. Had a hell ofa time learning the blueprint stuff. took it twice. the first go-round, instructor said good enuf, but offered it to me again in final quarter.

I had no idea what i was getting into. I had a suzuki 370 i rode in the woods when I was a kid, (mid 80's, I'm 37 now). then Got a 2003 Suzuki marauder 800 in 04. Flipped out for a year, then went back to school.

She was ruff, I tell yah. No wheels, been sitting fo years, rusted, locked front brakes, supposedly it had mags, but I preferred wires any ways, hadnt seen the motor yet, no bars no seat, no tank, crushed rear fender, no head light, no tail light, when I got the motor, it turned over, but no compression on one side. when I peeked in the plug hole, no piston. later on tear down, that piston pin had give in, and crushed the piston, cracked and folded in half. With all the alum. sand in the bottom, I half expected to find katkrap in there:yikes:

So I tear it all down, get the frame dipped and stripped, hard tailed it, and started the rebiuld. I have new sleaves, pistons 1.5 over, rings. resurfaced the head, new valves, need to do the carbs(bs34) next. .

Since I didnt have a tank, I went to some swap meets and found a sporty tank, stripped it, rinsed it out, put the cap back on and rusted it out almost immediately. junked it, got a late 60's sporty tank, did not strip and rince, sent to a painter friend, who shot it in black.

The frame geometry didnt change much. It isn't lowered, or raked, but it is streched 2 inches. I used a frame fixture the guy I bought it from made from a hospital bed.

I have a harbor frieght offroad head light, i will use the type of front blinks that clamp to the forks, the rears are small after markets, and am currently wiring the turns. I will use the originall switch boxes, but I polished them up. they shine up very nice. The tail light is a lens from a 59 chrysler(christine). I made a backing plate for it, and the 1/4 inch sissy bar that wraps up and around. I use a cut down 72 rear fender for the back, shaved the forks, but kept the brakes.

The engine electrical is done, thanks to Marvin DeLack of wiseguyschoppers in marysville, washington. I used a small breaker type switch box to hold the TCI box, and the soon to be fuse panel. I dont have a coil yet, and thats the only thing keeping me from trying to start it.

Things I need: Chain, coil, carb rebiuld, clutch plates(drive and friction)

Things I should do: finish blinkers, horn, killswitch.ick

Once I get it done and carbs dialed in, it will all come back apart for real paint, and organize wires.

i originally wanted the blue and white yamaha tunning forks, but couldnt find it in my computer, so i go with this for now.

Yes the forum is fairly new and I'm a moderator. I also prefer vBulletin forums over the others. If you like vBulletin now, just wait until we upgrade to vB 4.0 when it is released in a couple of months!

nice looking ride:thumbsup:the only thing i would like to ask is ,isnt the fender alittle to high up on the run?dont get me wrong i still like the bike just wondering:shrug:

That engine is gorgeous!

The fender looks like that because the radius of the fender doesn't match the radius of the tire. The front fender sitting on the rear wheel in the fifth picture matches the radius much closer. If you want a fender to sit 1/2" off the tire at any point around the tire, you need a fender with a radius of 1/2" larger than the tire (or diameter of 1" larger than the tire). So if your tire has a 25 1/2" diameter, you need a fender with a 26 1/2" diameter (or 13 1/4" radius). That fender probably has about a 5" larger radius that wheel because it was probably originally mounted about 5" off the tire.

Welcome dude! I'm bobbing and rocking an 80 xs as well. good progress!

I don't know about progress. it sat in my garage for almost 1 1/2 years while I was focusing on getting stable in a new job carreer. And on top of that, wife wanted a house 66 mls from work. big auto gas bills. but thanx. alot has been done, but there is a lot left to do.

yeah, the rear fender does look kinda wacky. but travis is right. the radius is way bigger than the wheel is. I want to slit it along the sides to shorten it up, but the welding would ruin the chrome. I think the chrome fender looks good. I could try shortening the lower mounts for thr sissy bar.
I was going to use the front on the rear, but someone broke into my van and took it, along with afew tools, a crapsman rollerstool, chaingaurd, stereo. But they left the motor, so,

You should be able to find another front fender for pretty cheap it that's what you want to do.

Ide like to, but im focusing on getting A coil. its the last thing I need to attemp at starting it. then i will fine tune the'look'.
If I had a front fender, then Ide have two styles- snug and sleek, or high, kinda interchage em for a different look once in a while, eh?

Bike is lookin great and travis is right about the engine looks nice and clean. I painted mine the same but only shaved the top end cooling finns. Welcome to the forum.

Thanx. I'm kinda torn between scotchbriting the sidecases, or polishing them.
as for the fins, I used a too coarse of sandpaper there, and it looks pretty rough in person. i'll try again later.

hahaha I have been scotchbriting all my aluminum parts (gives it a nice brushed metal look) I did polish my cases first and then changed my mind after a couple hours of polishing lol.

A couple hours? doing it by hand? I have a Haborfreight polisher. It isnt very strong, but its WAY better than hand polishing.
I think I only paid 80 for it. I have a coarse side, and a fine side. I need new wheels now though. I polished a old brass letter opener a while ago. just another excuse to goto HF
