2013 xs650 build off bikes

ok, sorry for the delay. here is where my 75 Standard is today...

sorry if the pics are too small, not too good at the editing yet.

I am building a single seat rigid bobber that will basically have the original neck, engine and maybe the wheels.... I have a sick and demented idea for a springer, hope it works.

I got little mans disease. I dunno I like being in the bike , not on it, gas tank in my face, scraping shit in the ground when I'm riding her too hard. I think it's the drag racer in me.

Continuing my street tracker build as part of the build-off! Hven't done anything on this for a couple months so it was a good time to get back on it!

I've been going over and over in my head on what to do for a tail section. I knew it needed something but I just wasn't happy with anything I came up with. Spoke with my Dad about it to get something going, he had a good idea, I modified that a bit, tweaked it to my liking and got started. About 5hrs worth of work, but I took a bunch of 1/4" round bar into this:

A small LED tail-light will go in that flat spot at the back. Still need to skin it, and add mounting tabs, but I'm really happy with how it's coming out. Covers the bottom of the seat nicely, and slims up the rear of the bike.

I don't know yet if it 100% matches the style of the bike, but that's what it going to be. :)

Thanks for looking, I should have more updates soon.

Here's mine. Coating a set of wheels for someone else right now hope to start soon. Tempted to use these shovelhead mags.

guys i love ur guys project the father and son bike project was something i never got to do with my old man he passed away b4 i started rock'n street bikes so i kind of got a soft spot for them and good luck on the deer stake out. hope you bag a big one

i got the frame for my bike today it a 78 xs roller but no title but its cool cuz i know its not hot this was a doner bike for a custom i built for the owner and the title went with it and it's new custom frame. it has alloy rain gutter rims that will not be make'n the cut for the build but there some of my fav's when it comes to stock xs wheel. so tomorrow i'll be hit'n the shop hard to finish up my xs750 and start rip'n this apart to start move'n forword i got whats in the pic and the leftover parts from the stock bike. now i just need a titled neck and im good to go

I'll be in the Video class of the build-off. Bought an '83SK, half in a basket, just about one year ago. Had some major home repairs that kept me busy last winter and summer. Now it's time for the fun stuff. The PO was parting the XS out - said it wasn't charging. So the parts he sold first? Yep, the electrical items. Gave him $ 350 for what was left. Got a title and I'd say about 90% of a bike.

Plan: I want a solid, tip-top runner - Check out engine first, totally new wiring, make sure the riding position is perfect for me. After that, I'll see where it goes.

Good luck to all

Alright, I need to apologize.

Its been a busy first of the month for me. My best friend from back home flew into town to propose to his now fiance, and I'm to be the best man. Also I work in a pretty seasonal industry and from now until the beginning of spring is pretty much non-stop go for me, so I'll apologize if I'm not as active as some of the others in the build off. Now that all that crazy stuff is out of the way I can turn my attention back to my bike, at least for the time being.

The first picture is how she started.

I then got her running pretty stock in this you tube video

Then we swapped to hugh's handbuilt PMA. And Wed I'll be installing the PAMCO to get her back and running.

I have always maintained that I will make the final choices on her eventual look once I'm able to get her on the road for just a little bit.

I started out thinking cafe...but I'm now leaning more toward a brat style with visual impact kit or a hard tail.

I do know this, I want her to be low profile, deep tunnel peanut tank, and clip on bars. The rest we will just have to see when she gets finished.

Every time I look at the Show your XS thread I get some good ideas . I like the bikes that aren't really one type , they took some stuff from a brat, tracker , street-fighter, cafe and built something unique. I like having the option of rebuilding a custom into something different . You can build a tracker from a cafe, you can build a cafe from a brat .... ect. But once you weld on a hard tail that's as far as you go , you really limit your options.

I have looked at a couple of half finished bobbers ( the guys building them ran out of money ) thinking about ways to put swing arms back on . There is a few ways to do it , cutting the neck off the bike with a title and putting it on a no title barn find frame , stuff like that , but it is lots of work and right now would cost me more money than it's worth to do .

Just my 2 cents. I like the build threads anyway.

Scrambled,
You lose a slight amount of fork travel, but if the forks are bottoming, most likely they need fresh oil and to be "bled." Some people will tell you to change the springs which isn't a bad idea, but the fresh oil at the correct level will make a surprising change in the suspension .If you'd like, I can explain the entire process of changing the oil, which is quite easy and will make a HUGE difference in the amount of travel or compression in your forks. Even on my lawn ornaments, I use 21" wheels, cut 3" off the the springs and with the right amount of oil/fresh oil, you can not bottom them out. I do build bikes with front brakes, so I know what I am saying. Just pm me if you like any assistance.

I agree with everything you are saying. Here is my only thoughts on it though.

Really if I was going to finish/continue the route I was going, it really wouldn't look to much different. These bikes are perfect to get the "look" of a cafe racer with little to no modification.

Deuce is a prime example...my opinion...if you arent going the brit way of cafe'ing out your bike...its dead on. And for my own personal preference I prefer the non-brit cafe racer.

And I think that right there lies the problem I have with the cafe style, for this build off at least. Other then the engine there isnt much difference you are going to see on the outside. That's not to say you can't spend a ton of time refining the engine and making her scream like a bat out of hell on the track...but it will be hard to see that in a video (switched to video class awhile back)

So once this whole thing started...I thought...go big...or go home.

Don't get me wrong I'm still in love with the simple clean elegance that are the bikes I originally wanted...but I figured if I'm really going to try to contend...I'll have to do more then just a new seat and paint job.

I also thought if I can pull off a hard tail doing a cafe would be much easier later in my life...I've got the bug...and no matter how many set backs I keep running into its just been making me want to go farther...so I seriously doubt this will be my last bike I try.

Man that's the shit and the idea of this whole thing  Im not say'n everyone has to do a hardtail but I'd like everyone to push themself to go as big and outside the personnel box as they can!

Hey guys bit of an update. I finally got moved into the new garage....well at least moved in enough to start my build. We started the teardown last night but also spent a lot of time moving and organizing tools.

Here's the garage:
