inxs, Welcome to the forum! And thanks for sharing the list! It looks very complete and will be a good resource for members to decode their xs650 VINs to figure out the year of their motorcycle or engine. I'll have to compare it to the list I have to see if there are any discrepancies.

Hi fellas,
I'm new to the forum and returning to the world of XS650. I had an XS2 when I was in high school 25 years ago. I had to sell it when I went in the Navy. I recently came across another - this one is barn fresh. The odometer is at 11,000 and change and the bike looks new. I've got to give the tank some paint to remove the traces of barn living, but otherwise she's pristine.
The title has a VIN on it that is different from the numbers on the engine. Is there a serial number somewhere on the frame? I started checking this when I noticed my fork ears are chrome. The 72's had painted ears, so I suspect either someone has swapped the forks or it isn't a 72. The engine numbers and the numbers on the title are S650-121xxx, which according to the list are 72, but I'm puzzled because the numbers don't match. They are 85 off from each other, so they are close. I know older Honda's don't always match and they use the frame ID on the titles - is it the same with these XS2's? Where do they hide the number?

The serial number on the frame is located on the neck. You're lucky, I just took a pic of the neck this afternoon. It appears twice of my neck, one each side of the factory sticker. It also appears on that sticker. I will look tomorrow to see if my number match with the one on the engine but I think that they are supposed to match.

Hum, I don't know. Maybe your frame has already been repainted and that's why you don't see it. And I made a mistake, the serial number appears only once on the neck (twice with the one on the factory sticker).

Nearly every bike maker puts the number on the neck if there isn't one there it's probably either a custom frame or stolen, same with the engine number, people are very good at removing numbers so they look like there was none there.

- when using mikesxs charts to identify your bike be aware that motors, tanks, carbs, frames and colours are pretty interchangeable...
US Carb Details
motors need to be identified from the number,
frames from the number, rear footpeg mounts and other tabs if theyre still there,
tanks can be loosely identified by shape, lid mount, petcock/s
carbs 34 or 38mm linked or unlinked...specific countries and markets were jetted differently too, this is only apparent on opening the carbs

Ludlow, do you have any other pictures of the bike? Passenger pegs, seat, tank, carbs, front wheel, rear fender, etc? You may have a later year bike with an early motor, or an early bike with a later front end... or any combination really. The numbers should be on the neck. If not, it might be a bike that someone lost the title for and removed the numbers off the neck, or stolen like someone else said. I'd be damn tempted to scrape some paint away from the neck to see if you can't find any numbers or traces of them being removed. Very fishy.

Hey fellows,
I recently acquired an xs1 with matching serial numbers s650-000523. I cannot read the build date on the steering neck sticker. Does anyone know when this bike was built. From what little info I have gathered, it seems to me that this bike was possibly built in 1969. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ludlow, is the id sticker still on the frame? If gone then it was probably repainted. Generally painting won't cover the numbers enough to make them unreadable.

No the sticker is still there. It's just that the script is faded to the point of being unreadable.

I would tend to agree your bike was built in 1969. Given that the XS1's serial numbers began with s650-000101, I think it's pretty safe to say you have a very early bike. I acquired an XS1 a couple years ago that was in very poor condition, and wasn't much more than an engine, frame, and front wheel, and that was the lowest I'd seen -- it was 0006xx.
My recommendation is that you don't do anything to your bike to alter it permanently -- assuming it hasn't already been chopped up, of course. Restored, it will be worth quite a bit.

Thank you Mike. Fortunately the bike hasn't been chopped. Believe it or not I found the bike in a little town in Wyoming. I even have the original Wyoming title. It was almost a "pickers" scenario. I got it and a "72" from the same guy.
