Bob Costas, The 2nd amendment gives us rights that I don't plan on giving up!
Bob should get his ass fired IMO.
dumb asses needs to be banned not guns.

I wonder how bob feels about the kid that drove from the northeast to Wyoming to shoot his father in the head with an arrow and kill him on a college campus. Had something to do with a girlfriend daddy didn't approve of or something. Ban the bow and arrow? How's that gun free campus working out for the professor? If a person wants to kill themselves or someone else, lack of a firearm will not stop them. Cliche' or not, PEOPLE kill people.
I agree, Costas should be fired. Sunday night football is not his soap box to stand on, although I doubt NBC or the NFL will have anything useful to say about it.

I wonder if Bob realizes that he supports, and is compensated for being a commentator for, a sport that trains and highly pays it's players to inflict as much physical pain as possible on another person in order to stop them from advancing a ball down the field for our entertainment. How come you never hear of a professional shooter, hunter, trap/skeet shooter killing someone? They have many guns and use them on a daily basis. Probably because they are not juiced up and trained to snap at the drop of a dime. Probably because their brains are not mush either from beating each other down every week as we cheer them on.
Probably because they haven't had a coach all their lives yelling at them for more or watching their coach throw stuff around on the field if something goes wrong,
sometimes beating up other coaches.

Huh, Bob?

Don't even get me started on the drunken mayhem at these games he prizes so much.

You won't find anybody who watches TV sports who doesn't spend most of their time in front of the TV watching Americas Got Talent and the History Channel too.

I heard a woman at work say, basically, the same thing Costass said. She was in a hunting store!!!!! My boss then asked her if her kids have the new "Black Ops 2" game. She said, "yes" and he said, "Exactly what I thought".

For several generations in America the principal entertainment given to us by the entertainment industry has been people killing each other. What hypocrisy. I don't see many movies or TV shows but I can't think of many where the main theme isn't killing. That's astounding.

Not to mention shows that have put drugs and alcohol as a common theme. And some shows even make fun of this.
Just desensitizing our youth and making violent shows/games part of "quality family time".

On another board I frequent, there's a 'bad words filter' that changes salty language to something else. If you type in 'pussy' it comes out 'Bob Costas' in your post. Appropriate, I think.

Seems to me that Bob has made a pretty good living off of the sports world including football and boxing. This past year or so, some have been linking concussions to suicides in both sports. Why doesn't Prince Bob comdemn these activities? We should ban boxing gloves and football helmets.

Oh crap...thats funny.

Yeah...modern day entertainment reminds me of the old Roman gladiators goin at each other , stopping just short of maiming or death. This gun thing is all part of the liberal agenda for this country. Agenda 21 mean anything to anybody? Long read , but if you have the time , it will scare the piss outta ya.

Not questioning your 2nd amendment rights, but why the need to have 30 shot mag pistols and assault rifles for protection.

An extract from an article dated june this year.

According to an ongoing tally kept by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
In Chicago, Illinois, where the homicide rate for June 2012 was 50 percent higher than just a year earlier, three separate outbursts in only the last 20 days have left four people dead and at least another 13 seriously hurt. So far in 2012, more people have been killed in the metropolitan Midwest city than the number of US servicemen in Afghanistan.

Earlier this month, two suspects fired at least 61 bullets in an outburst in Queens, NY that, while yielded no fatalities, left several people injured — including children. At the time, the Wall Street Journal reported that the NYPD recorded 730 shooting incidents this year alone, showing a 12 percent increase from the same time in 2011.

Pretty harrowing to think that more citizens get killed in one US city buy gun violence than US soldiers in a war zone

Mr. Costas expressed his opinion about the "gun culture" of this country. He did not suggest any changes in the law. "Bowling for Colombine" makes the same point.

It cannot be denied that this country is the gun-murder capital of the world.

Nor can it be denied that we export murder to Mexico via the "gun show' loop hole that feeds weapons into that drug war zone ( a war zone created by US policy).

Mega-Violence is romanticed in movies, games, TV and ust about every other media.

Politically our country follows the "bomb now and negoitate never" Bush doctrine.

So, do we have a violence problem in this culture? Yeah I'd say we do.

Are guns part of that? Well, they certainly are a "force multiplier"

I don't have a solution but I don't have a beef with anybody expressing their opinion on the topic.

I don't watch sports anyway.

I'm not arguing here, just pointing this out.

Here's some numbers for everyone.
All in 2010
Number of gun related deaths: 31,200
Number of suicides from guns: 17,300 (51% of that 31,200, so over half)
Number of homicides from guns: 12,600 (40% of that 31,200)
60% of total homicides were from guns.

Ok, ready?
Number of deaths from alcohol: 75,000 (a 32% drop from 10 years ago, still more than AIDS)
Number of deaths from drunk driving: 40,900.
That means 10,000 more people died from driving drunk than guns!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like we have a drinking problem.

I bet Costas has nothing to say about that Dallas Cowboy who killed his buddy yesterday driving drunk.

funny thing about Chicago: Chicago requires that all firearms be registered with the local police department. Chicago also prohibits the sale of firearms within city limits. Cook County has banned the possession of certain semi-automatic firearms that it defines as assault weapons, as well as magazines that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. The state of Illinois prohibits carrying weapons on your person, or in your vehicle in a state of readiness.
In New York it goes like this:
In New York City, after you fill out the three-page application that, among other things, asks you to list your employment and residences over the past five years, turn in two affidavits, get someone to promise in writing to take charge of you weapons if you die or are incapacitated and pay $431.50 in fees, the police may issue a permit to keep a gun in your house or business, or even to carry it. Or they may not. Because New York is a "may issue" state, with permitting authority delegated to the counties, it's up to local officials whether to give you a handgun license. As the NYPD puts it on its website: "If your investigation results in a determination that you lack character and fitness for a license or permit, your application will be denied."
This is why most handgun licenses issued in New York City are for retired police officers or for people who want to keep a gun in their house, not people who want to carry their guns with them as they move about. Only about 4,000 licenses in 2011 were for "carry" outside a home or business.

And those restrictions, of course, do not apply to CRIMINALS

Do I "need" a 30 round magazine to defend home and hearth? Well, no, but "need" does not enter into constitutional rights in my opinion. Ask if certain loud-mouths you know "need" first amendment rights! How about this: The Dallas Texas police department has a "no chase" policy for high speed pursuits. Why do they "need" 350 HP cruisers that get 14 MPG on the taxpayer's backs for then? Thier average response time (39 minutes) leads me to believe they could take the bus and be faster! How's that for overkill?
The "gun show loophole" does not really exist, inasmuch as it's not illegal in most states for people to buy and sell firearms privately, but indeed the gun show environment IS exploited as a shopping opportunity for the types that try to discreetly obtain firearms for misdeeds.
Not that I believe any of the problems are OK, but I am perfectly willing to live with the system as it is, rather than have government take anything away from any of my Freedoms.
As far as the number of homicides in the US, there's 330 million people here. Some people suck. The more you have, the more of them suck at any given time. Afghanistan has somwhere around 300,000 "combatants" that KNOW someone is trying to shoot them, and a US Serviceman's heightened state of awareness (thank God) and superior personal protective equipment and training keeps them safer than the average unarmed bystanders in a city with sky high crime, drugs, and unemployment, so the numbers don't resonate too hard with me.
If we are to believe statistics from special intrests, try these on. Averaged out, 4000 times per DAY a gun is used to prevent a crime. That number includes police officers and citizens alike. A person in the United States is 50 times more likely to successfully prevent a crime with a firearm than they are to be a victim of a gun crime.
Contrast the "gun problem" with the alcohol problem for a minute. 900,000 people or so are arrested every year for DUI in America. Every 39 minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver, and every TWO minutes, someone is injured in an alcohol related incident. Every last adult in this country knows a person with a DWI, but how many know one (we are talking personal acquaintences here) that is, or was a victim of gun violence?
I agree we have a problem with romaticized violence. We also have a problem with decency toward our fellow man, and respect for the law. Multifaceted deal. People pick which of our Freedoms they would see curtailed to fix society's problems based on a number of things, and no such thing exists as an un-biased opinion on the subject. I can tell you that there is nothing romantic about killing another human being. If you have a consience, it's a permanent weight. If you do not value life, that weight is never felt, and that is the biggest problem of all.
End of rantings. Be safe, all.

I bet Costas has nothing to say about that Dallas Cowboy who killed his buddy yesterday driving drunk.

Dwayne Goodrich, about 10 years ago, Dallas Cowboy, killed a good samaratin on the side of the road changing a tire. He was drunk too.

Classy. "America's team" wouldn't be complete without an alcohol-related slaughter every once in a while. (I'm rolling my eyes here!):wtf:

I agree that Bob Costas Needs to pull his head out and check the facts.
A firearm is just a tool. No different then a hammer or screwdriver. It's the person that uses the tool that controls what the tool is used for.
Leo

This claim seems unlikely to me:

A person in the United States is 50 times more likely to successfully prevent a crime with a firearm than they are to be a victim of a gun crime.

can you provide a source of that information?
