I fear this day may have all ready arrived.

You romantic devil, you! I bought my wife a .357 one time "just for her"

You trusting soul. I was married once. My ex might have actually used it.

Hey......I thought you were already in Texas. (your previous post said "when I get back")

Uhhh, were reading this from our computers.

That's true, and it's an issue to some degree, but I'm not in the habit of carrying my computer around in my ass pocket and consulting it every 3 minutes while ignoring actual humans around me, or annoying everyone within a 30 foot radius.

Did you hear about the new Verizon cable box? I heard on the radio today that it will "pick up" on certain things in the room where it is located. This will then cue commercials that have a relevance to what is going on. Cuddling? cue flowers and candy commercials. Laughing out loud? cue sitcom commercials.
That's right folks. A box that watches what you do in your own home. Fun.

I think today's youth forgot there is even an outdoors. Maybe that is why there are so many slugs walking around.

I'm serving a self-imposed 16 month sentence in Maine for financial gain. I get a conjugal visit back to Texas for a bout 8-10 days every 7-8 weeks. I'll be all done in April, and back to Texas for good. Needed to increase the take-home for a while to offset 3 years of bad luck. It's like working 2 full-time jobs, but it's doing the business. I'll take home 35K more this year than last.

It just ain't right. Not that I'm bitchin', I hope the friggin' oil dealer has ta sell his Lexus...

When I was a kid I hated being inside. Meant I had to clean. Nothing to do in my house. it was hot in the summer, cold and drafty in the winter. We had a little B/W tv anyway. It was horrible. And I'm only 37. I grew up on a dairy farm. I loved being outside!

Hang on a few days!

I grew up outside myself. There were over 1600 acres of combined family land available for me to run over. We had lots and lots of chores (a 1/4 acre garden will do that) with keeping our own place up, farming tobacco, corn, hay, cattle, hogs, occaisional lumbering, etc. When that didn't keep us busy, we dammed up the creek, raced up the 800 foot hill to the TV antenna, went "hunting" with our BB guns (usually betting on long shots on random objects) went to the family dump and built shit, and generally in the summer we were outside by 8 AM and not allowed back in til dusk, after you "ticked" yourselves, of course! My son has a vivid imagination and enjoys building stuff, making his own storybooks with illustrations, and has jsut started writing little screenplays. He plays hard outside, and will stay in the swimming pool til the meat is falling off the bone. He has a few video games, but does not play them much.
The summer I was 15, I worked (illegally) in the coal mines for 5 dollars an hour, 60 hours a week, and I bought my own school clothes with the money. I did the same the next year, and when I graduated high school, I went to work in the mines, and worked the Saturday before I went in the Army on Monday.

I used to live in a bay area that had a lot of vacationers who had summer homes. I worked part-time at a tackle shop. We had a ton of business in the summer. I can't tell you the number of times parents bought whatever their kids wanted. Nothing like hearing a 16 yr old whining. Then, when the parents asked a question, got a smart ass comment back from the kids. Usually because the parent was interrupting the kids oh so precious cell phone conversation. "Please, thank you". Ya, I don't think so. Of course the parents did nothing about it. You could tell the polite kids that came in though. Well mannered, didn't touch everything, asked if they may have something, ect. That was usually rare though.

The store was owned by a guy who had 2 sons. One of his sons was a avid baseball player, about 15. He played travel ball, always outside throwing at a net, very active. The other was like a vampire. He was around 12 yrs old and weighed over 200lbs. He would leave the house, which was next door to the store, come over and grab a bag of chips, then crawl back into his cave. He also played that online video game "Call of Duty" for hours on end. He was always inside. The older son did really good in school/sports and the video kid failed one year. Geeze, I wonder why. His father rarely came in the store either. Just a money thing for him.

When his parents tried to take the video games and the phone away, because of his grades, the kid went ape shit. Stole his grandfather's credit card and tried to order another video game unit, broke his parent phones, all kinds of stuff. He even came over to the store and emptied the employee pizza fund. I completely blame the parents though. They let him get away with all this stuff for a long time and then tried to change the habits of a 12 yr old. They sent him to counseling, of course, but the habits and examples his parents exhibited were the sole cause. "Do as I say,not as I do". Just another adult being told what to do by their child. I think the punishment lasted all of about a week and he was just yelled at about the stealing and other stuff. Last time I was in the store the manager told me this happened a couple more times. Same cycle, bad grades, no video games, rebellion, then the parents gave in.

I wanted a Nintendo when they first came out. My friends all got one for Christmas. I remember my father telling me that if I wanted one, then I would have to work for it. Same thing for my dirt bikes, gas, car, anything above a normal present. To this day I am thankful he did that. He's gone now, but I still try to live as if he was right there next to me, watching.

Thing that bothers me bout internet on cell phones is people shoving their phones in my face..."Did you see this?"

They only do it once...once.........Kev.

I agree fully. I am on track to be the proud 1st time father of a baby boy, and I have told my wife that cell phones, ipads, laptops will be out of the question when it comes to my child during their youth, especially infancy. They will also not get a cell phone when they are 10,11,12,13,14,15. They don't need it. Parents I feel need to put the foot down on this fad of well, all the kids have one so here ya go, BS, you're the parent, tell them hell no. That is all. Have a great day.

Let us know how that works out!

Idiocracy is here already http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy combined with the fat slobs from 'Wall-E'. Smartphones have replaced common sense, things are getting even 'easier'. The latest out from Chrysler is a transmission shifter which is a knob you turn, there is no lever etc and no direct connection to the transmission. I mean jeez, just how lazy can people be? :( I see mouth breathers every day who would be incapable of survival if the power went off.

Technology has made our lives easier but at the same time has created a whole generation who will be incapable of doing anything on their own.

There is a book titled, "The Tao of Pooh". It is based on the Winnie the Pooh character and Taoism. (pronounced 'dow' or 'dowism') I highly recommend reading it. It is a fast read too. The book was written in the early '80's, before modern computers, before the internet and before the cell phone. There is a little part in there about how modern equipment has made our lives easier and saved us time by using them. However, the author points out that, the time we saved by using these modern tools has only made time for us to introduce new things into our lives. Therefore making us have more "things" (items, work, ect.) to deal with and no actual additional time. There is only 24 hours in a day. No matter what you do you can't change that. Modern "time savers" don't add time, they just make a void that the human mind will soon fill with something else, that usually takes more time from their day. Got it?

Sort of like the theory of 'Stuff'. I got a bigger garage, so I got more stuff.

I don't think my dog has these problems.
