when installing the advance rod and lobe, how do you determine if the lobe is in the right direction as it could be in two possible directions depending on stroke and advance... this is where i'm stuck and any help would be frikin' awesome!

The secret to correctly installing the advance rod is the locating pins on either end for the points cam and advance unit disc. The pins must face the same direction or the timing will be 180° off.

I might add that your points cam needs to go on with the full size end in. If you put it on backwards your points will run on this full size area and not open or close.

wait, maybe not... couldn't i make the engine 180 degrees out of time by being on the wrong stroke in the engine when installing the rod? arent' both of those pins on the advance rod, meaning they can go in either facing down or up and that wouldn't determine which stroke i'm on?!

If you do manage to get it 180 out just pull the advance weights off spin the rod 180 and relocate the weights, apart from the time taken trying to start the bike with the ignition 180 out, it only takes a couple of minutes to change.

It doesn't matter what position the engine is in or what stroke you're on. Just match the direction that the locating pins point and your timing will be correct. If one pin points 180° away from the other, then your timing will be off.

The advance unit fits onto a similar locating pin on the cam end. There is only one hole for the pin on the cam so the only way to really screw this up is to leave the pin out. When the advance unit is mounted correctly with it's locating pin, that's what really establishes and locks in your timing. Then the advance rod gets tied into it with the little disc on the advance side. Unfortunately, since Yamaha drilled the pin hole all the way through the rod, the little advance disc can be installed in either of two positions. Only one will give you the correct timing.

Don't forget this little detail....

There are two locating pins on the advance rod that can be installed in one of two ways. The slotted disk on the advance can be installed in one of two ways, so that's three things that can be 180 deg. wrong, but if two of the three are 180 out, then no problem because 180 + 180 = 360.

So, if you think that you have one of the three 180 out, don't worry about which one it is...just flip any one of the three 180 degrees and you will be OK.....:wtf:

Don't forget to have the wires from each set of points going to the correct coil for the cylinder associated with each set of points!
