As I've been reading stuff on here I've got curious about where you all come from and having virtually no knowledge of the geography of North America I've been googling the place names. Since I've always lived in a country where 400 miles is considered a long way I'm just beginning to realise just how big the United States is! I think the furthest you can get from the sea in Britain is something like 75 miles which means that practically everyone here has been to the beach at some point but I wouldn't be surprised if some of you hadn't!

Let's put it this way. Montana is the same size as Germany. Oregon is roughly the same size as the UK and Alabama the same size as England. If that puts it into perspective.

South Carolina is 219 miles long north/south, 273 miles east/west. It's 31,187 square miles. Population is 4,679,230.

In contrast, Ireland is 170 miles wide, 301 miles long, land area 32,595 square miles, population 5,306,000.

And SC is not considered a big state, it's 40th in square miles and 24th in population. Yeah, this is a damn big place.

Check out some of the areas around the Great Lakes, my wife and I honeymooned on Isle Royal, I think it has the biggest island in the biggest lake on the biggest island in the biggest lake in the world, or something like that. Anyway, greetings from Minnesota!!!

The Chesapeake Bay is 64,299 sq miles at its drainage basin. It is 200 miles long and total coastline is 11,684 miles. The River Thames is a tad longer, but can't compare to the overall size of the Chesapeake. It is also the largest estuary in the U.S.

Now, the Mississippi is over 2,500 miles long!!!!!!!!

Before the Boston tea party didn't we rule you guys? Merry Xmas n a happy new year to all our friends divided by a common language .
Well you tried anyway:doh:
Iowa population 3,074,186 Area - Total 56,272 sq mi
(145,743 km2) - Width 310 miles (500 km) - Length 199 miles (320 km)
Iowa is the only state whose east and west borders are formed entirely by rivers.
So we are a Mid-western state with a East and West coast

Lol, a couple colonies on the east coast. Then we had to save your asses twice. Just busting your chops.

I drove from San Diego, Ca to San Fransisco, CA and it took 7 hours. 7 hours in the same state, ugh!

Straight through from Charleston SC to Colorado Springs was 41 hours, stopping only for gas and to pee. We were worn OUT when we got to CS, still had to drive another 8 hours the next day to get to Silverton, Colorado.

The US is a big ol' place but there's some places I don't really want to see again. Like Kansas. HUGE state and not a damn thing to see except flat fields and whoop ass thunderstorms.

I would love to ride through the states experience the real states not the neo con media bollox we get in the UK. Guys you live in the 2 Nd greatest country.. Take it easy .

when doing a comparison you must include all the countries of Europe not just one country and as a whole Europe is also "Big" it's where Americas roots originated. You also hold more historical valves that span for centuries.

The Europeans came over here and erased all the history. There were 90 million people here, and they had been here for centuries. Most of them did not survive. The Christians brought them liquor and venereal disease.

I did have an idea for a holiday to see America and my plan was to fly to Las Vegas then pick up a hire car and drive to LA to see the hot rod museums then drive up to San Francisco-I now realise this is not seeing America at all but only a tiny part of it!
This has reminded me of a conversation I had with a guy from Detroit years ago who said the big difference between us was in the UK 400 miles is a long way but in the USA 400 years is a long time!

listen... I recently got in a panic when I got completely lost for an hour in a few square miles of rural Somerset :D

I simply cannot imagine the vastness of the US :yikes:

We have signs that say, "Next fuel 250 miles".
It takes me 5 hours to drive to the in-law house. And it's only one state over.
Took me 21 hours to drive to school and that was only half way across the country.

Just think about the wagon trains that traveled from the east coast to Oregon and California in the 1840's. The Oregon trail, 2,000 miles, from St. Louis, Mo to Oregon, took about 6 months to travel. And that was after you traveled from the east coast to Missouri. Talk about balls.

Giant Sequoia.....enough said.
