My on the cheap bobber build thread.

I am going to get rid of the backup lighting.
Thats all I know for sure so far.
I just wish yamaha had not used 20lbs of wire when Im sure 10 would have worked.
I could wire it from scratch but i'm to tight with my doe.

I'm thinking of doing from scratch but if there's a good harness available to save time, I'd consider.

pma/pamco/headlight/brakes/neutral/kill switch and electric starter is what I plan to run.

Carbon, I bet I've cut and pulled out over half of the harness on this bike. The only thing I'm not running is the starter. The factory ran wires up and down this poor bike, sure to lose some weight there. I'll still run the start button wire back just in case I change my mind.
jdizon, if you got that little to run, from scratch would work out better for you. IMHO

I never had electric starter working. I'll need to figure that madness out. I'll probably end up tweaking the one I have.

Don't mean to hijack but jdizon if you need a starter I have two. Ill send you one free just pay postage

wow,

I literally just picked up 2 xs650's last weekend as a package deal. A '78 and an '82 heritage special. I'm planning a bobber build with the '82 and prob sell off the '78 to use toward the build. What you have done here is exactly what I'd like to do myself. A cheap build that doesn't look cheap in any way. I just read this whole thread and I can't wait to get my wire feed welder converted to gas and pickup my hardtail from TC Bros...

This build rocks dude...

Dang dilbone, thanks man. About the only thing I'd do different is changing the stock gauges for some smaller aftermarket ones, but who knows I might fall into some money or something before this puppy is done. You'll have to post some pics of those bikes dude.
Just follow the instructions for the hardtail. I looked up the instructions on the Tc Bros website for better pics.

I was originally looking at aftermarket gauges, but seeing you use the stock has me thinking I might stick with stock myself. I don't think they look bad at all and mine are in decent shape. Another reason is that I'm so clueless with these bikes I don't know what would work and what wouldn't for gauges...stock cables or new cables...proper ratio for these bikes??

I start to have a panic attack just thinking about it...:banghead:

I will definitely have to start a thread once I get going here and get myself set up to start working on it.

Also, I like what you did with the stock peg mounts and again saves a few more dollars. Did you weld a tab onto them? Did you use the exhaust mounting hole for the 2nd bolt on the bracket?
Sorry for all the questions...I feel like a sponge right now.

No no sponge away! Yeah, if you look at my pics I welded a tab on and used the two holes to mount them up. This is not my idea, but I liked it.

I think at some angles the stock gauges do look too big. Probably because the headlight I'm running is a lot smaller than the stock one.

The smaller gauges I was looking at are on mikesxs's site. They are setup for the stock cables and ratio's.

They aren't a biggy right now though.

I should add I cut the pegs off of the mounts and welded the factory studs that I cut off the ugly plates to the pegs.
Here is a pic. I didn't get a good pic of this at the time I was doing it. I also used the chrome acorn nut that came with the stud,so it's all factory stuff.

Yeah h3llb3nt1 I was lookin' to buy a set of pegs to mount up, but couldn't make my mind up. I'm also cheap and impatient so the stock ones looked pretty handy and free....
I might go a different way when I'm putting her back together.

About to put together a garage sale to fund the engine upgrades. Bought these first but went with spoons. $25 to your door if you want them

I'm pretty pissed that my brake hose that I bought from mikesxs came with aluminum banjo's. I bought a steel banjo, but it won't fit the brake hose.:wtf:
The hose end is fine thread and of course the steel banjo is the correct an3 thread.
I'll have to buy a new hose to sew up my rear brake setup now.:banghead:

I'll be in the shop on Sunday. Gonna button up the wiring enough to get her started.
I'll try to get some video of her running! Hope to run her outside a little if it isn't raining.
