Dick's Street Tracker

The tank is steel. It was advertised as a 1975 DT400 tank. I got the steel one so I could weld on it, maybe have to notch it for the engine mount, not sure yet, maybe just make a new motor mount. Also probably have to relocate the pet cock. I think the steel one's are a little easier to work with. Plus those aluminum ones go for big bucks. The frame mounts were identical! perfect width. I'll get some pictures in a little.

Reason I asked is because of the petcock mount. The steel one has a wider flat on the bottom, more options for the petcock remount. Take a look in my tracker build thread for the smaller/streamlined top engine mount I used.

Yep, the yellow tank on page 4 of your build is my exact tank. I wouldn't say it was a "popular" tank but it looks good, and fits with minor mods, so....

I see what your saying about the aluminum one, not much to work with on the bottom. I have a huge gap between my tank and my tail piece/seat, a much larger gap than you originally had. Not sure what to do with that yet, maybe just make the seat pad fill it?

What did you decide on your headlight? You going to use the XL one?

decisions, decisions

I finished up a little more work in the past couple of days. Frame cleaned up and a coat of paint on it. Also got the engine back in, now the hard part starts, assembly. Waiting on the swing arm bushings, and once those come in I can finish aligning and mounting the rear shocks.

Luckily the the engine was in real good shape so not much to do there, I hope. It was running when I took it apart, good compression, oil looked good, and odometer read 9800 miles.

My goal is to have it done by the end of February. The only hold up I can see is probably ordering the Omar's real wheel adapter. I need to do it soon, I heard it can take a while to get stuff from him sometime's. And I need to order a set of those pipes you got from Gary, how long did it take to get em?

The wheel kit did take me a bit, but once I go Robert on the phone I pulled over gave him my CC info and asked that he ship it the next day. So it did go pretty quick for me fortunately. If he has it and you can get a hold of him it is only a week out.

Gary was real cool real quick other than when I spoke to him on ordering it was the huge snow storm back there. He said it would go out by a certain day within a few days of time and he beat his estimate. Great guy for sure. He did say I got the last SS set of TT pipes he had at the moment so you may want to talk to him before you order so he can at least get his shop stock back up. I got mine around Christmas hell he may have more by now. It only was only like a week also.

Well I tried to work on my tank today to make it fit around the engine mounts. I thought it would be a easy, quick mod. Wrong! I guess 35 year old sheet metal that's been soaked in gasoline it's whole life doesn't like to be welded. One of the hardest weld jobs that i have done, but by no means I would even consider myself a competent welder.

The welds are horrible, I know. The metal on the old tank was just so thin and hard to weld. But, I put a couple of PSI in it with the soapy water and no bubbles. I also filled it with water and let it sit for an hour with no evedince of leakage. So, I guess it will work for now. (I put the black paint on it so I couls tell where it was touching on the engine mounts)

So after 5 hours of dicking with this tank, I take it home and and it still hits the stock engine mounts. So I grind down the head of the center bolt to make some clearance.

I only notched one side of the tank becasuse it was such a pain in the ass, so I'm only going to run the left side top engine mount. I think it will be enough. So I had to grind down the right side of the head and and the bolt heads to make it fit.

So, enough boring you, I got it to fit and this is what it looks like. Good enough.

Somebody asked about the bike in the background. It's a 68" titled T120 Triumph, but has a 65" motor in it. This was my first Total teardown and complete rebuild. I found it in a shed and put way too much work in it. I'm sure the chopper guys on here can appreciate it.

It's not a XS but it's what I think they improved on. Don't get me wrong I love the Triumph's.

Not a whole lot of done, but some progress. Installed the swingarm bushings, squared away the upper shock mounts, rebuilt the carbs with new UNI filters, and started messing around with some side cover ideas. Shoot maybe I'll keep the NASCAR look? next on to battery box, and wiring:(

Thanks, so far I've powder coated, the fork lowers, triple trees, swing arm, engine mounts, and shock springs, and handlebar clamps which are triumph. It works great as long as you buy good powder. Go for the 6 dollar a pound powder instead of the 4 dollar a pound powder. It's ridiculously more better and a 2 pounds go a long way.

I recently scored some dirt track tires. I'm still going to go with the ones Carr's selling but for right now these will work. Once I ride it and it has plates on it, I'll make the call. I got a brand new Continental Dirt Track 130/80-19 CM5 manufactured in 09, I think this is the last year they made em, and a used Dunlop 27/7-19 CD5 for dirt cheap.

So I have a pair brand new Bridgestone G851 120/70ZR19 for sale:) The front was alright but it just wouldn't of worked for the rear.

Started making some side covers out of some aluminum. I needed a place to hide the electrical before I started wiring it. Or I'm just stalling because wiring sucks.

Thanks, I think once I get paint on they will look sharp. Thinking of the the old original scallop design left bare aluminum and the rest painted. I'll have to mess aroound with that a little.

OK, just got off the phone with Robert from Omar's. He's been out of stock for the 19" rear wheel conversion kit for a little while. He just restocked today and they are ready to ship! So if anyone wants one, nows the time to get it.

Mine's on the way, I went with a 36 tooth rear sprocket 520. The price went up to $315 because he's using a newer more expensive type bearing.
