PMA not charging bike

Hi Ashley, lights brightening on increasing revs is a good sign.
I had a siimlar issue last year and I had a faulty rec / reg unit. It did the same to my battery. However my battery was old and I "assumed" it just died. Put a new one on and it did the same thing to the new one.
 
Lights flickering with a battery. What is your voltage at idle? Voltage when Revving?

Have you had the battery load tested? Do not assume it's a good battery just because new/newer...

Thanks Brian, I've been to that page many times while searching the tech section.
That page deals with stock stator, not the PMA.

I chopped the bike from scratch to get to the point in the picture...guess I'm a total retard after all. :wtf:

Appreciate you chiming in and I REALLY hope you are making progress getting your shop back up and running.

I did have the battery load tested and it is no longer any good. I bought it new and only ever used it the one time. Seems weird that I fried a brand new battery. Bike has only been ridden for 30 minutes since my chop. Ran great for the first while and then never again. I'm assuming that the bike ran well until the battery died and because one of the stator wires had severed, the PMA wasn't sending a charge to the reg/rec which in turn wasn't charging the battery.
Seems odd that I'd now have a battery that is no good, and not just a dead battery that could once again be charged.

I don't want to install another (new) battery if the reg/rec is faulty and going to detroy it.
 
You keep going back and forth. Is it charging at all? If so, voltage at idle, and voltage with some input from throttle. Voltage is to be taken directly at the battery. Lets not jump back and forth...

My way would be;

Look for 12+ volts (12.0-12.5) at the battery and 13.5+ (13.5-14.5) when engine running at above charge point.

So to do that;

- hook up the multimeter to the positive and negative on the battery
- check voltage, should be 12 volts
- turn on the key, check voltage, should be 12 volts but may drop slightly, more if headlight is on
- start bike check voltage, should be 12 volts
- rev bike to about 2,500+ rpm check voltage, should be 13.5-14.5

If not you still have issues. Try another battery and repeat.

Above is standard test no matter what type of charging system used on the XS650.

Still issues, recheck regulator/rectifier and charge coils again.
In your case, coil check as stated by Hugh at connector using Ohms reading.
And follow with standard regulator checks.

Look for bad grounds.

Ground between engine and battery very important, because it is between the mounts and frame and ground lead the battery is attached to.

Jumper cable attached to bare metal engine part and negative battery terminal will help to determine if that is the issue.

You have painted everything, hope you bared some parts to make good metal to metal contact for the grounds.

Ground to reg/rec box important here as well.

Guys........................just a quick conclusion to everything. My charging system is now running fine thanks to everyone's help. Seems that the broken wire on the stator was the culprit after all. Once it was repaired, everything is charging nicely.

Now my carbs on the other hand...........well......that's another story and yet another re-read of the tech section carb guides!
 
Hey guys. I am having the same issue with my PMA. I tested the rec/reg and it's good. Tested the ohms on the pma leads and two are good at .7ohms and one is dead. Just wondering where I should proceed from here.

Forgive me for being late to the party. Check o make sure that install was proper, and that the 3 yellow wires from the stator are wound snugly an away from the flywheel. Pull the rotor an check if you have to. I still don't have Internet or a computer that works at the shop - so I'm doing my best to check in from my phone. Check for .7-1.0 ohms between all yellow wires on the stator with the reg disconnected.

I had one of the leads on my stator come loose and I re-soldered it. Haven;t had a problem since. Hope this helps.
