Hi so I pull the clutch in, drop down into First, (From neutral) I slowly let the clutch out, it catches, I start going forward, my RPMs drop down a tad, then once the clutch is fully out, it just stalls. I'm not sure if it's because I have to give her some gas, or just a tiny clutch adjustment. I'm stuck Please help!..

Motorcycle additions -
- Rebuilt carbs, (Floats were gummed to crap, wouldn't move a millimeter)
- New battery
- Stock Airfilters
- New Master Cylinder

The more you let the clutch out, the more gas you have to give it to keep the engine speed up. It's normal and ok to slip a motorcycle clutch, btw, unlike a car. You should take the MSF rider's course. If you're under 18 it's free in most places.

Well, if the fuel supply is in order and set-up correctly, sounds like it's getting to that time to put in a new clutch, but start with the usual adjustments and see if it is clutch-related.

Ignore the snide you have to use throttle comments! Is the side stand switch working? The H model has a side stand interlock it will kill the ignition with the clutch out when in gear.

Welcome to the Wisconsin crew and thanks for listing your model number in your description!

^Ha Ha! He wrote nothing about not being able to start it. We think he just doesn't understand how the old Model T clutch behaves.

No,this isn't the starter circuit, it's ignition, the top left is a tci ground to kill terminal (I think that's how it works) from a 7 wire TCI.

^I see what you're thinking. I think the way the stand switch works is to prevent starting if the stand is down. Might kill the bike as well if the stand goes down. Don't see how it would cause his problem unless he's mistaking the kickstand for the shifter :) Plus he says first the rpms drop, so nah.

If the switch turned the bike off as the stand was going down that could be a cool feature for pulling in :bike:

Not sure but I think the clutch switch plays into this also. It'll run in gear clutch in, you release the clutch it kills, lots of bikes do that.

Story on myself; I ran a CB900F off the road on a high speed sweeper. Stopped to put on gloves or something put the sidestand down forgot to put it back up. Duh-oh

The rpms wouldn't drop perceptibly first, so I think it's far fetched. Story on my own self, I was riding a borrowed Suzuki and couldn't get it started again. Somebody told me to put the stand up first and I thought he was joking. Had never heard of a kick stand switch. But have now cultivated the habit of putting the stand up or down first thing though...that's another two stories which you can probably guess...

I like the debate about the side-stand cut-off switch - you guys leave no stone unturned. Perhaps that switch can simply be fault regardless of whether the side-stand is moved.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I don't think it's kickstand related, because I can start the bike when I'm in neutral, (With the kickstand down obviously). I then put the kickstand up, pull the clutch in, drop down into 1st, I then start releasing the clutch real slow, it catches, about halfwayish, (I'm moving forward slowly at this point) then when I let it go all the way, it'll stall, and I come to a halt, I've seen plenty of videos, where they just can cruise around without any throttle, along with the clutch out all the way.

- Bike idles about 1,100 RPMS.

PS: Thanks for welcoming me. :)

I don't think you're going to take off and cruise around @ 1100rpm in my opinion the xs lacks the torque to lug itself around @ that low of an rpm combined with a person's weight. Just give it some gas. The bike seems fine from what you're describing.

You need to keep the rpm's at least in the 3000's when pulling away. get rid of the car thinking, you CAN slip the clutch, A LOT if needed. look at it this way. The throttle is a big flowing river, your clutch is a floodgate. The river(throttle) stays flowing constantly and the floodgate (clutch) controls the speed at which the water flows out. Makes sense, no?

Also I wouldn't ride around under 2000rpm in any gear with the xs650 engine
This is not a Harley engine which cruses at 2500rpm
You will have to do what the rest of us have had to do.
learn how the engine, gear ratio, clutch works together.
So get out a practice till You get it.

Do you have any experience with cars or bikes using a clutch? It seems you don't know how to use a clutch. When you release the clutch slowly, you come to a "friction point". That is the point where you give it throttle and start increasing the rpm's. As the rpm's increase you continue to release the clutch. Sounds like you are just releasing the clutch without giving it any more gas...................yes the engine will stall!

I'd like to see those videos where they cruise around without any throttle. Please post some of those.

Ignore the snide throttle comments! Your kickstand is broken!

A lot of the bikes they ride without any throttle, are on sport bikes, and dual sports, most of the How to ride a motorcycle videos on youtube don't use the throttle at first,
