buildin' me a tracker

This just keeps getting better and better. Sounds like I'm bragging but this has never happened to me before!

First a calendar...................

Dave, is the above pic with the longer shocks?

Dave, do you remember what kind of fork oil you used and how much? The internet is all over the place on oil weight and amount. Thanks.

I used Motul 15wt. Amounts are as follows:

XS1, XS1B: 223cc per leg
XS2, TX650: 136cc per leg
TX650A, XS650B, XS650C: 155cc per leg

Hope this helps.

On your forks, the stock amounts are ok but they work better with a bit more oil.
With the springs out forks collapsed, fill to 6 inches down from the top. I use a piece of clear tubing with a zip tie around it 6 inches from one end. I put in about 8 ounces of oil. I put the 6 inch end of the hose down into the fork so the zip tie is at the top.
I then use my Miti Vac to draw out any oil above 6 inches down.
At the cost of oil, try a few different oils.
In the book, they used several oils, early forks used 30w engine oil, later they speced 10w30 engine oil. Later they speced 10w oil.
I have tried A 5w20 motor oil, a 10w30 motor oil as well as ATF. I like the atf the best so far. I may try some others.
The extra oil decreases the amount of air above the oil. This increases the air shock effect of the fork. This reduces fork dive while braking.
The oil flows through holes in the damper rod. Changing the weight of the oil effects how fast the oil can flow through the damper rod. Thinner oil flows faster, quickening the responce to bumps. A thicker oil slows the flow and slows the responce.
Try a few to find what you like the feel of.

Davy boy your famous mucka,,,was it worth all the hassle mate.

It absolutely was. Building the bike was a first for me (I've built hot rods, race cars, and being a mechanic all my life many, many engines, transmissions, etc. but never a bike). It was a blast! But in the end it I knew it was not something I'd ride much. My Husqvarna supermoto has spoiled me. So I sold it. do I miss it? Sometimes, but things change, life moves on. Miss you guys though. I really do. That's why I sneak back here every once in a while. :D

Pre- hope you sneak back here soon so you can tell me where you bought new motor mounting bolts. If my failing memory serves, you did replace all those bolts.

Still many questions for the master. In all the time you had your blue tracker, did you ever notice any deterioration of the fuel tank with the ethanol fuel you californians have? Anything goofy in the carbs or weird color in the fuel? I know Robert insists his tanks are fuel proof but still reccs that the fuel be drained if the bike will sit a while. BTW, have you heard from him? No one ever seems to answer the phone there.

The only thing I noticed was that after the first run and I removed the carbs for a rejet the fuel was blue (same color as the tank inner), but never after that. Never had a problem with gas sitting in the tank for, at one point 3 months. I just got off the phone with him and he's still in business, busy as hell.
