ian ross, if you look on 650skull's list your 447-901948 is on the list. The numbers start at 447-900101 and end at 447-910000 for the 78 XS650 E, your number is between them. This makes yours a 78 E.

Sorry I'm new to the forum. I picked up a bike last week that had been torn down and hard tailed some time mid 80's then sat for 20+ years. The frame # is S650- 000250 does that mean it's a 69 or 70 ? What vin# starts the 1970 model year ? The reference sheet said 69 - 70 S650- 000101 to S650- 006686 but by some posts people are saying there are 1969 and 1970 's in that first year of production. Just not sure ! THANKS Cook

Yes 1969 was the first year the bike was produced.

The model production was from August of one year to July of the next, (except for your XS1 then the first month it was built was Oct 69), and the production Year/model was the Year that ended the Year/model production run.
Eg Oct 69-July 70 = XS1
Aug 70-July 71 = XS1B
Aug 71-July 72 = XS2 and so on
 
so you are saying it is a 1969, because of the first year exception to the rule that after Aug. the production year advances. sorry just not sure and the guy is having a time finding the ownership. Thanks Cook

Thanks Cook MY other bikes a smoking big bore Canadian 1985 RZ350 street racer. I just have a love for the old Yamaha motorcycles. Ever since my first bike at 4yrs. old a Yzinger 35 years ago.
 
Hey, Cook, welcome to the forum. Yeah, that S/N is a very early XS1. Double check with the engine S/N, on the front engine mount, see if they match. There were several important upgrades that occurred in those early versions, may be worth researchin'.
 
Thanks , I was thinking the same thing about the vin # being so low ! From the info I have received on this site, I believe that makes it only the 149th xs1 ever made. It's to bad it has been chopped but it is what it is and I will bring it back to life. I will check the mount #s .
 
I'm buying my late brother in-law 1973 Yamaha bike. However, I don't know what it is. My sister sent me a copy of the title, but having trouble decoding can you help?
The title vin number is RT1145365

Yea some pics especially a side on from each side. I would add them to the ID thread, (sticky in the garage), showing all the models.

The pic i posted is the only one i have found of the 81SH in Frost Silver. Nice color.

Here are a few photos of my 81 Special. Apart from the tank being slightly different color than the side panel which strangely i have seen in another members 'original' bike as well. This one has got to be one of the most 'stock/complete' survivors out there. 1,060miles on it. Original tires, take note. etc.

walden22, Thanks for the pic.

Looks real nice. A seat off an 80SG will clip straight on your bike. The 80SG seat was a one year deal and it doesn't have the step in the seat like yours, just a gentile rise so it is a lot more comfortable riding and you can move back on the seat

Thanks, let me know if there is any other photos you might need. I can answer the 'what was it supposed to come with' questions for some people.. ..still has the factory yellow lock/chain with matched keying. .. I will be doing a little custom work on this bike later this week. Nothing irreversible, which. . . unfortunately poses an annoyance with the stock seat mounting points. But i;ll think up a work-around. I have a spare I might try and make into a 80SH as it needs to be recovered. Will post a thread when I complete the work. Thanks for your help. Love this site!

What an incredibly original bike ! a real bit of History . Thank you for the excellent photos, they will be an excellent source of definitive dating and originality reference .I suppose the bike should really be in a Museum.:shrug:

I love the grey paintwork ..the first I've seen on an XS but as you say the bike is crying out for a modern seat and grab rail

Not the bike that is crying out. It's me. I struggle with the concept of preservation and enjoyment. What is the sense owning something just to look at it? (and I say this having done both before). Yes, if a museum offered to buy it or trade me a 'rider' I would be open to it. But not a lot of bike museums with stock xs650's in them. Maybe a few bobbers or trackers as that was part of the history. Anyway I will do period correct mods (mostly). Steerer bearings, swing arm bushings, rear shock, ignition, pods, pipes. The things that were done by most everyone who bought these in the 70s/80s. These were the shortcomings then. So this will essential be stock bike with the 'should have come from factory' mods. The seat will be clip in, and I will have the stock one still, and I'll just swap the pipes rather than chop up a mint set, etc. Most things will not be noticeable to people other than a trained eye, and those people should give a nod of approval. hopefully. cheers mate, will keep you posted.
