Luthor's Build

Hey Lex.

Just found your build thread today and love all of it!

I figured out bag & tag in the winter of 1989/1990 when I rebuilt my first engine—a 1200cc motor from a 1963 VW Bug. Every nut and bolt went into a ziplock bag, the bag got labeled with the part the fasteners came from, and then the bags were poked and slid onto a wire hanger I opened up.

Assembly was in reverse and nothing was lost.

You don't have OCD. You have a gift. You 5s well. It's something you do, my Mystery Man. You're an all-star. Keep breaking the mold!

First, lemme thank you for that comment. Like I've said before, all the compliments I've been getting on this engine build have made me more motivated to keep the engine, and finish the build. I did a search on Google and what I read was pretty darn amazing! I think my 5S started when I was young since it's ALWAYS been like that.

So "RFLIVES" was kind enough to fabricate a coil mount for these big ass green coils. Super cool guy and he knows his shit-check out his sidecar build. Do it. Here are the coils mounted on the bracket and on top of the engine.

And yes, I know the wires are not connected. Just trying to see how things start to look.

After seeing how nice the engine looks, and how ugly it looks with those green coils I decided to bite the bullet and order me a pair of Dynas. Z1 Enterprises has them fairly cheap so after exchanging a few e-mails with HHB, I decided to go that way.
The spark plugs came in from MikesXS...

Along with the black wires as well. So much happier with the black wires than the yellow ones.

The machine shop tried with an impact screwdriver, just like me, to remove the 4 screws from the starter housing, but had no luck as well. They had to drill them out. The guy at Serenity Ridge Machining is pretty cool, and cheap too, but they have a lot of work, so don't go there expecting to get your part done in one day. Anyway, I found a screw at the hardware store, NOT SS, which I'm not happy about, AND, I've tried searching for an M8 shorter than 10MM but I've had no luck. One option would be to grind them down and chase the thread or maybe I'll get lucky looking for the screws by the time I get the housing and brackets back from powder coating.

Here's the internal components of the starter housing. You can see I've already acquired replacement screws in SS along with nuts and washers. The long screws I cannot find anywhere besides eBay and it's $16 for 2 screws... Not sure about that.

Heat your nuts man!!! In this case one. Apply heat to that nut for 5 min and it should expand enough to say Uncle!

So after exchanging a few e-mails with HHB, he pointed me in the right direction and I will replace these:

With these:

I'll see if "RFLIVES" can fabricate a clean nice mount to place them on top of the engine (for now).
Now something I had been procrastinating about was replacing the OEM screws on the oil sum filter with SS ones. Went ahead and got that knocked out this morning while the coffee was brewing.

The rest of the parts, including the exhaust, should be ready by Tuesday, if not, then Wednesday.

Wow! So that's what it's supposed to look like under there!

Seriously. I replaced my clutch last weekend, and in order to drain the oil, I had to remove the sump plate because the drain plugs would not budge at all. Which was fine because I wanted to clean the sump filter anyway.

But I had no idea that there were some shinny acorn nuts underneath there!

Thanks man!

Tracer,

I once had a 1100 Yamaha that I was working on that I couldn't get the spark plug out of one cylinder.

And knew by the feel of it, it was going to rip threads out if I had tried.

Told the customer to take a hot rip down the road for 5 miles and back.

Spark plug came out with little or no effort. Saved the threads. New plugs and good to go.

Take your bike for a hot ride and retry the base plug sometime.

Good Luck.

Tracer: I'm assuming your engine bottom looked something like this engine used to look like on Page 1 of the build thread? How bad was it when you removed it?

Brian: That is an excellent technique my friend. Works like a charm.

So the exhaust isn't ready being coated yet but I decided to go ahead and pick up the other parts that were ready. I had initially gone raw on the bracket, but I wasn't feeling it so I coated it. The same with the velocity stacks. Black IS my favorite color, so I decided to get them painted as well. Here are the pics:

Bit of dialectric grease on the inside lip of the carb holders and in they go.

I also got the starter housing and brackets coated as I had mentioned before:

Now while brewing some coffee I decided to look for some M8 1.25 6MM screws in stainless steel and I got lucky to find some in TX. None of the hardware stores around my area had anything shorter than 6MM. Found these:

http://www.ballerbolts.com/stainless-super-low-head-cap-screw-m8-1-25--6mm-30mm-.html

Hopefully they will arrive soon, along with the OEM starter stay screws that I found on eBay. For now, the starter will stay to the side and I'll go back to it once I get all the screws in the mail (fucking hate waiting!).

In the meantime, it'll give me a bit of time to work on this cheap-o hydraulic clutch part off China. Did some research on HHB's and he just supplies the hardware to modify these. NOT satisfied with the "silver" tone on this part. Will attempt to take it apart and see if it can be powder coated. I'm sure there's gotta be some rubber components in there that will not allow me to do it.

No word from RFLIVES yet... :-(
