early xs650 production numbers

Im restoring one right now.... saw one go for 6800.00 in Seattle lately ...choppin a 70 or 71 :yikes: is really a pretty poor move:doh: unless its in shambles... but wait... chop away I need some parts:thumbsup::bike:

hey guys, new to the forum. i recently picked up 2 bikes one was a 1980 And the other, which is a 71 on the registration but when i research the bike on the net everything says its a 72. the reggie, frame and motor numbers match, but the reg says its a 71. its the classic red and white model. i picked this bike up a few miles from the canadian border. does anyone know if there is any difference from the u.s.a. bikes and canadian bikes? thanks!!

Hard telling whats been changed in it's history, the 72 has a front disk brake and electric start the 71 is drum, kick only. Registration doesn't mean as much as serial number. You often see it the other way, a left over registered as a year newer bike.

it has a disk brake front, drum rear, but, no elc start. im gonna keep doing my homeowrk. oh another question, i got the bike without a key and before i start looking for parts i want to get it running. you know what color wires going to the key to hot wire it? or any other advice? i think there is a 4 wire plug running to the key switch.

from the battery to the orange wire on the coils is the basic make the engine run jumper. be sure to use a fuse in that line.

At the ignition switch Red from the battery to Red white for ignition and to brown for the rest of the electrical accessories.

I wouldn't be so quick to tell someone how to hot-wire a bike. This is the Internet after all, you never know who is lurking.

Two reports in area craigslists recently of bikes stolen by perps cutting padlocked chains to get the bike. :yikes: I wonder if they then hot wired them and rode them away? it seems like half the posts here are about making a bike that has a KEY run.

you need to get 12 volts (battery) to the orange coil wires, don't leave it just sitting with juice to the coils you can overheat them.
Next thing I would do is pull the plugs put them on the spark plug wires ground them kick it over and check for spark.
But really all of this has been covered here

Talk to us after you have done what's suggested there.
Good luck.

I just picked up a 72 xs650 from a friend. It needs a tank and point. But it is clean. Only 16,000 miles. Have a hard time getting parts. I am building it for my wife. Nothing to major just paint and pipes and bars.

1969 xs650 Yamaha ? 1969 Honda 750/4 ? Production #'s v/s ser #'s?

Just adding another thought about the production num's.An older mechanic friend told me,he recalled being told back in the day that the num's for yam 650'went low to high for the year sequence but as the factory supplied the racing world early on there was some I.D.distinction.HE added,he had no clue what it was.Correct or not;another thought.
