Anyone Running A Key Starter?

They can work fine. Most of these switches in the start position send power to the starter relay/ solenoid. The stock set up sends power to the relay and the start button grounds it.
Check the switch you want to use. If it sends power out then just send the power to the red/white wire on the relay, ground the blue/white wire. The relay doesn't care if the switch is before or after as long as power flows.

Looking at getting a 3 or 4 position ignition with momentary starter built in.
Anyone running this? Pros? Cons?

Well, this subject comes up often. Not sure of the outcome of some of the previous threads. Perhaps the authors didn't survive their experience.

Here's the cons:

1. When starting, you have to take one of your hands off of the handle bar control. If you take your right hand off, then you can't control the throttle which usually needs some movement to successfully start the engine.
2. If you take your left hand off the left control, then you cannot operate the clutch. Many bikes require that either the clutch be pulled or the transmission must be in neutral, so you would have to put the trans in neutral. If you fail to do this and your bike does not have these safety features and if the trans is in gear, the bike will start and propel you across the garage with just one hand on the handle bars.
3. When stopped at a red light, if the engine is going to stall, that is when it will stall, just as the light changes to green, so which hand do you use to start the engine? (see #1 and #2 above) except that if you use your left hand and the trans is in gear you will be propelled across the intersection with just one hand on the handlebars. :yikes:
4. If you use your right hand to operate the start switch, then you will have to use your right foot to hold the rear brake because all traffic lights are on inclined roads, especially at night. :banghead:
5. In most cases of starting the engine cold, you need to pull the clutch and operate the throttle, so that will be impossible with a key type starter.

Hi rick,
shopped for a new car lately or even watched the TV ads?
The latest "feature" is the separate push button to start the engine.
Just like on a bike.

start " buttons " are not new. Its how it was done in the 20's. I have a fiesta ST with a start button, and at the dealer, I joked a bit about it, and they caught on to what I was doing. I prefer keys in cars, no keys in bikes.

Hi angus,
yeah, car starter buttons used to be on the floor, eh?
There was a faked-up "official" document back in the 1960s that said the Government was planning to mandate removing modern cars keystart feature and replacing them with floor mounted starter buttons because too many women drivers were getting their feet caught in the steering wheel.

Maybe the women and their boy friends were doing something other than trying to start the car:wink2::)
