My 81' XS650 Chopper & Intro

I have the matching cam for this crank. But I just dropped a bunch of money on 700 pistons so I don't want to have to buy new pistons.
Looks like I'm putting the stock crank/cam back in. No rephase for me.
Anyone want to buy an XS1 rephased crank/cam? I paid $500 for them shipped. Had no idea it was XS1.

Hi Phail,
seems to me that you are too far into the project to quit now.
You can get some of your piston money back by re-selling them and put that towards getting the proper ones.
Sure you'll be out some money and that will delay the project but it will also save all the effort you've invested in it.
And you will end up with the re-phase which is why you started the project in the first place.

I don't have the money right now to do it. I also don't have the time. My current engine is leaking oil out of the drive axle right now and I need to get this motor into it because I don't have a car. It's my only transpo and I'm getting tired of getting all oily when I ride it.

I'll just pull the crank out and put the stock back in. That's only a few hours job. At least I have the 5th gear mod and 700cc's. Rephase will have to wait until next year (or never).

I'll try to get my money back out of this crank/cam if I can. But it's probably going to be a paper weight. Maybe I can put it in my 81 engine after I do my swap. I don't know.

Have I mentioned I hate working on stuff? I only do it because I have to. But I really hate it. I just want to ride it.

Hi Phail,
gotta say for someone who hates working on stuff you've put a whole bunch of effort into your build.
OK then, oil's cheap and so are plastic baggies to tape over your left boot.
Ride on, eh?
BTW, with me it was the right boot.
I rode most of a season carrying 2 quarts of oil in the saddlebag and wearing a baggie on my boot.
Took that long for Mr. Stupid to find that the engine breather casting was 1/4" loose.

Lol... For me it's wearing a rain suit to keep the oil off my back and leg. The whole back half of my bike is oily. hahah

I could put another $400-$500 into this and run this crank/cam. Or I can sell it and get the right one so I can use all the parts I have and only be out the difference between crank/cams.

I can rephase the engine I'm taking out later when I get the right parts. Pulling the engine apart was actually pretty easy.

I've got so many projects in the works. It's very strange that I hate working on stuff. LOL But I like my things done a certain way and I haven't found a builder that thinks the same way as I do.

So I have a Suzuki Samurai rock crawler project, an Ironhead project, and my XS650. I have to get my Samurai running before winter because I don't have a car if I don't. I need another $5,000 to finish it. The Ironhead is almost done. Just have to finish fixing the clutch and get the rest of the fab done. Like maybe two more weeks of my procrastinating to finish it.

So, yeah, I'm a strange cat.

Started over yesterday. Took it all the way back down to nothing. Took an extra 5 hours because I kept forgetting things but I got it all buttoned up finally. Going to put it in the bike today and fire it up. Gotta get some miles on it before the Alient Run coming up in less than five days. LOL

Finally! I'm done and it's running great. Had issues with the new clutch pads but got that all fixed up. (I didn't soak them)

Here's the proof:

Now it's time to put some miles on it before the Alien Run 2015. Also just in time for a spring storm. I'll get to test my new rain suite too.

I think I lucked out on my carb jetting. No popping, no smoke, and the plugs are starting to turn just right.

What do you guys think? I am worried about the slight bluing there though.

Here it is at 66 miles. I'm thinking that maybe I need to move the needle up a notch. Seems like it's running slightly hot. It looks like it's starting to get a little white on it maybe.

I can go up one on the pilot jet too. I'm at 35 now. I was black at 50 and I have one jet size left. A 45.

You know you can go half sizes up or down on the jets. Right

Yeah, but I don't have them here. LOL

I'm going to raise the needle one notch and I think that will do it. Then I'll check again. It's just barely too lean. No popping just a little hot. I'll bet that just moving the needle will get me into the brown. We will see. I've only got one more day of testing before my 600 mile trip. LOL

And now another photo of my spark plug.

Here is with the needle raised one notch. A hair rich but I need more miles to be sure.

BS38's
145 main
35 pilot
One notch higher for the needle. (by lowering the clip one notch)

No Alien Run for me unless I can find a new ATU tonight near Reno, NV.

Those little C-clips are pretty important not to forget. DOH

Road 100 miles before it let go. But yeah I'm lucky I wasn't 150 miles away.

A buddy lent me his so I'm still on for the trip! Sweet. Now I need to get a new one ordered to replace it.

Good for you, have fun on your road trip. tim

Hi Phail,
100 miles, eh? Howdya get the bike back home?
Good that you have a "Bro with bike to lend" so you can get to the alien run.
BTW, is that the off-road bicycle race?
