Mufflers to go with Pandemonium?

Was able to do a little "horse trading" with someone regarding my half mile Omar Pipes. I traded them for the Yo Mama pipes from Pandemonium. I won't run straight pipes without mufflers however. My question is this---I know by looking at pictures that most people on trackers run something like an Emgo muffler--but could I run Harley Mufflers instead? Thoughts?

And no, this isn't my bike (wish it was) but I like how those mufflers look.

JS I have the same thought, but I am going to run Cherry Bomb car mufflers to give it a British look.

Believe me the cherry bomb mufflers are not that loud. It's a pretty inexpensive way to have something a little different. tim

I have these, they are pretty light, so might be a good thing hanging the way those pictured look. The fiber glass packing blows out after a season, but I just crawl under my house and grab more. they sound good for the price. idle isn't annoying, and is rideable. My pipes are pretty short. 36" to the muffs. no discoloring.
My pipes are low, not high like you want, but the bump up in diameter is only 1/2 inch round..

I have the same pipes and have been trying to decide what direction I want to go also. Right now I am a big fan of mufflers from Cone Engineering (www.coneeng.com).
They have several options to choose from. They offer Mini Megaphones that are only 8.5" long that I really like. They are a bit more expensive but their quality and reputation are outstanding. I also really like the picture of the blue bike you posted. That is the direction I want to go with mine with a few minor modifications to the pipes.

I am thinking something longer like the ones on the blue bike above. I like all of your ideas---the cherry bombs might be a good idea but don't think they are long enough. I have checked Cone as well, they have some good stuff. Angus, I agree on the bump up on diameter--don't want them to just all of a sudden get large--want it to be pretty sleek looking. Thanks guys!

We just finished up some new mufflers that are semi-cylindrical for those that don't want the cone/reverse cone look. Not on the website yet (should be there in the next week or so) but in the meantime give a call.

Coneeng, those cylinderical units look real nice, something a little different from the norm.
Have you guys ran these on many bikes yet? Could you give an indication of what kinda tone they would have? Must be somewhat similar to a glass pack or cherry bomb?
I'm looking for something similar, been really eyeing your tapered cone units but overall I would prefer something deep sounding rather that rappy. Would you say these cylinderical units produce a deeper sound than your cones?
Many thanks

Because there is more volume inside the muffler they tend to have a deeper tone than the same length cone/reverse cone muffler would have. I think they sound more like the 18" long muffler than they do the 12".

As far as how they would compare to a glass pack style muffler that is a little more difficult. Many of those style mufflers were designed for a car with a much larger engine than your motorcycle has. The sound quality of a muffler has a lot to do with how much air it was designed to handle and how much is actually going through it. We design all of our mufflers based on the inlet diameter. It's why we don't make a "one-size fits all" muffler like many other companies offer. To me it's like saying there is a one-size fits all bikini? :yikes:

Thanks for chiming in there Coneeng. I recently purchased 4 of your 18" long reverse mega's for my GL1000 build, and while I haven't seen them yet, my fabricator says their quality is some of the best he's seen.

The prices reflect that, but I think I'll be ordering some of those cylindrical mufflers to go on the ends of my XS pipes when I get around to building them! Any XS sound clips of some 2-2's w/ any of your mufflers on them??

*EDIT* found this one: https://vimeo.com/75344785, not the best though

You're welcome!

I think the XS sounds pretty similar to the modern Triumph, maybe not quite as bass-y. Here's a link to several videos from that platform: http://www.coneeng.com/product_videos.html

does anyone happen to know whether Cherrybombs are a smooth perf core, or whether they have some sort of rippled or bumpy internal tube? any shaped internals rob significant power from a bike motor... plus the smallest available ID i can see is 2"... not surprising since they're automotive.

also, are they (preferably) 16ga steel, or heavier?

the look would actually be pretty good on the latest build, but the intended performance may be a mismatch. very hard to tell w/o a set in hand.

Most of the lower cost muffler like these use a louver core as they are less expensive. Usually the cores are 18g and the outer bodies are 18g or 16g. Packing is usually poor quality fiberglass fill that breaks down. When it does break down the mufflers will begin to sound hollow. Especially if you running a larger diameter than what would be optimal. The flow differential between the two is frequently overrated, again especially if you are already running a larger diameter.

coneeng- appreciate the prompt response. i studied your website the other day- it's full of helpful info, and you make high end products.

i generally build my own aluminum cans to suit various projects. for the current XS build it would be easier to pick up a couple of your reverse cone models. will consider...
