Picked up this beauty yesterday.. HAPPY Halloween indeed!

I'll keep you updated on the build. Any reccomendations would be helpful. This is my first build.

Right now the electrical is completely gutted. The frame needs paint. The rear fender has to go. The seat is not mounted and i'd love to get a different pod filter. Thats just a small amount of the changes I want to make.

OK, you're in Northern Idaho, so you are already under 8 inches of snow and -10 at night, right??? Go get a chainsaw and cut some wood to heat your shop, OK? HA! Welcome to the board. If you wanted a choppah, you done bought yourself a good start. Lots still to modify there so you can 'make it yours' and such a good platform. Use the search bar liberally here and you'll find an ASSFULL of answers and topics on what you're wondering about. This is one of the best forums I've joined over the years and tho sometimes pee-pee size and ego's can get in the way (like in EVERY web-forum), 99.5% of the time everyone has helpful USEFUL well intentioned advice and it is invaluable for doing what you're gonna do. I really have been treated well here. Watch out for gggary and hitnheadfred tho, they WILL ravish your ol' lady and take pictures of you naked if they can...

Hi prism and welcome,
OK ,you bought it like that so you can't be blamed for what's been done to the poor thing, eh?
Rewiring kits can be bought from several sources on this list.
I'd fizzcan the frame. Powder coat stands up better but it can't be patched and it ain't cheap.
Nothin' wrong with that rear fender, it looks like it'd work better than most aftermarket fenders that I've seen.
Bike also needs a front fender, the stock fender is also a fork brace and XS650 forks get all wobbly without one. That or install a fork brace.
Elegant solo seats are also available from list members. I don't see much to recommend that slab of sheetmetal even if it was bolted down.
There's two kinds of pods. UNIpods and rubbish. You ain't got a UNIpod.

Looks like a Road King front fender, I like it too.

Nice custom intake! Perhaps instead of replacing that fender you could just take a cutting wheel to it and use your own thoughts on what you like to "re-design" it. You could also take that seat pan and have a custom cover made for it. Welcome, and enjoy!

It is indeed chilly but only 45-55 degrees during the day atm. I'm used to forums I have a 1980 cx500 brat that i built, primarily using forum help :)

I appreciate the words of advice!!

single carb, I see... cool!

Yeah, I bought this bike from a guy that has built 15+ of these 650's. This bike is obviously unfinished the owner couldn't pay to have the bike finished so he commissioned the shop to sell it.

The wiring on the bike has been stripped of the nonsense, its still there just not attatched where i needs to be. I will look into unipods how do i tell the size i need? This carb is not stock.

It is indeed a road king fender! I guess i need to strip the paint and see what I like.

I absolutely agree and think this is a great idea. If you look closely you can see my cx500 in the back with a cut fender I did.

Welcome!

Personally, I would lower the gas tank (if possible)...it seems like it's sitting really high compared to the flow of the frame/bike. Otherwise, as been said...trim up the sides of the fender, add a front fender or brace (but the fender also helps A LOT when you go over puddles), and wrap the seat pan. :)

Oh, and I suppose making sure it's running/charging well would be the first priority. ha ha.

Have fun!

Ditto on the gas tank, I'm not a fan of the Frisco style mount but that's just me. some guys like it and depending on the frame it can really set the bike off.

WELCOME!

I like that fender. Now lets get to the new member hazing....

Isn't that the guy who invented the AK? And shouldn't he be asking for vodka?
