How Can I Go Kick-Only and Protect My Bike from Theft?

Not much you can do about having your bike hauled away in a truck, but as far as riding it away, rather than go to great lengths to kill the ignition, install a hidden fuel cutoff valve that will allow them to start your bike and ride off, but it will die in a couple of blocks and be abandoned.

Wire an airbag under the seat. A secret switch would have to be flipped in order to start it. A timed relay could be set to allow the "fast getaway" enough time to ride off. Boom! Instant karma.

All great feedback and comments! Might just go the DADDYG route right now and do with a chain and keyed ignition. I want to try fixing up the steering lock for my build too... the key won't turn any of the tumblers.

I also had a whimsical idea of putting a "kicker lock" on the bike where I weld a steel ring of sorts to part of the kicker pedal crank. That way I could loop a chain or bike lock through it as well as part of the frame, preventing the cranked from being kicked down and starting the bike. Weird, but certainly a possibility.

Might be easier to rig a lock for the clutch lever to keep it pulled in thus preventing a kick start or a push start or riding off with a electric start. Maybe as simple as a bicycle lock that is big enough to go around the handle bar grip to hold the clutch lever in.

I think this has turned into a funny tread. I have never had anyone go near my XS650 parked . Many people came up to it and said WHAT IS IT!!! . Now I have seen so many Harley's get taken every year at the roar to the shore now that's funny. All you need to do is get off your bike and lock it and its safe but too many BAD ASS Harley want a be outlaws get off bike shut it off put there helmet on the handlebars and take there lady and go walking to see the vendors. Because you need more chrome LOL. Well along come a real 1% and your bike is gone. I like to just go there and lean against a pole and just watch and it happens over and over thank god for phones and dumb people. They walk the streets and LOOK for the target then one guy follows the target and the other sits on the bike. Phone rings and bike is gone. Last year was not bad only 9 stolen year before that 17 gone. You know all you need is a chain and a good lock has worked for me for over 40 years plus a XS650 is so light after its chopped I have put them in the back of my truck myself without a ramp. SO GO buy about 900lbs of weights and weld that on the bike it will be there when you come back.

use the above pictured plastic fuel shut-off at your peril, as i recently discovered. they can fail in a not obvious way and your carb(s) and intakes will flood badly, your motor paint job will suffer, and your garage floor will be a puddle of gas. big fire hazard too on a hot motor.

anyway- to avoid theft never park your ride out of sight for long.

That's a neat product, but I would use it on the clutch because all the thief has to do on the brake side is loosen the bleed screw and ride it away using the rear brake. On the clutch side, he would have to cut the clutch cable, but have you ever tried to ride a bike with a broken clutch cable, especially in city traffic?
