Im working on my gas tank, i stripped all the paint and gave a rough look with sandpaper and i want to keep the raw metal look but I would like to clear coat it to protect it from rust. I read a few threads about this SprayMax 2000. Can i use that? Or do you guys recommend anything else for just raw metal. I am planning on doing the same with the frame.

Thank in advance!

I am doing the same thing and plan on using Spraymax 2K. It's good. Real good.

Should I prep the metal with something before I spray paint? like mineral spirits to clean it up? or just go at it after wiping down dust and all that.

Mineral spirits will leave an oily film, that will work if you are painting enamel. For what you are doing use a wax and grease remover available at walmart automotive department or any auto parts store. Also lacquer thinner would work. Lightly wipe with a tack rag to remove any dust after that.

Awesome, Thank you! Could i use the same clear coat for my handlebars? or i could use any clear coat.

Hi solidstateirons,
degrease immediately before clearcoating. I use acetone but lacquer thinner or any solvent that won't leave an oily residue will be OK.
SprayMax2000 has a real good reputation for gasoline resistance. It's only drawback is that once the thing is activated it's got a shelf life of a day or so max. before it sets up inside the can so yeah, do the bars, the frame and whatever else needs it just to get your money's worth.
[EDIT] ThatXS650Guy's post reminded me:- Don't breathe those fumes, they'll rip yer lungs out and now the Guy sez it'll do a number through yer skin. [ENDEDIT]

I used rustoleum wax and tar remover when I did my side covers. I stripped the paint and applied some vinyl graphics and cleared over that. It stuck fine...
And yes, use the whole can because it won't last long after you mix it. Oh, and it's super toxic so cover your skin and use a respirator.

Now, i heard about some yellowing or something like that after you apply the first coat. What is that? Also how many coats should i apply? Should i wet sand?

Thanks everyone for your input, so far its been a lot of help!

I did mine a year ago. No yellowing but then I don't leave it sitting in the sun.
I used it on my H1 tank at the same time.

A different option than clear coating would be to coat it with GIBBS Brand penetrant oil. I coated my bare tank about 6-7 months ago with it and have had very little surface rust appear. I don't think I would do a frame with it though as it requires periodic upkeep and recoating. Gibbs has a viscosity thinner than water and does not leave an oily residue like most penetrants. I have not found it in any stores but is available through mail order. Its a bit pricey but I really like the results.

Any two component clear coat will do. What matters the most is your surface preparation. Use proper automotive degreaser to clean the surface. Use new white whipes to clean as long as you see no contamination on your wipes. Dont just wipe the crap around on your tank, wipe it off. Mine has hold up very well for over a year, in a very shitty climate.

thanks all for your input! I will be working on the tank this weekend since i spotted some rust inside the tank and i will be cleaning it up before i do any coating. You guys always are a great help!

Would this be a good degreaser to clean the tank before Spray Max?????

I love the way you directed the grain on this tank.

Probably it's okay. I wouldn't use it though, but that's me. Don't forget to wear latex cloves when cleaning and preparing the surface, just so you wouldn't leave any accidental fingerprints or grease from your skin on the tank. Good luck!
