Great Smoky Mountain Rendezvous #24

What would a trip through Kentucky be without touring a distillery?
IMG_20160914_104203_387.jpg

Stopped at a truck rest area. The chain is a little dry and trucker spots are a good place to find oil containers with a little left. Found a gallon jug with 1/2 cup of oil and an empty sandwich bag for a dripper. Had no more got the oil in the bag and a corner pinched off when the sky opened up.
Went from dry to soaked in less than a minute. Didn't take time for a picture. Did get the chain oiled.

Thought I'd kinda wrap this up. Instead of leaving you at the Kentucky border.
Special thanks for the weekend to:
Richard for taking his time to tour me around Cades Cove.
David for helping me to cut my costs.
Micheal for being a great group rider. He earned my trust that he would have my back. Trust like compliments aren't treated or given lightly by me.
Doug who's attention to machinery and dedication to the sport is something to be admired and duplicated.
Ken your amiability was appreciated.
Finally Dick. Your willingness to grow me both as a rider and a tech means more than you will know. Truly you are a one and only "Grizld1".
And all the others who made this adventure what it was.

It was brought to my attention that the XS650 rallys are not scenery rides. While curve cutting and running 15 - 30 mph above posted speeds are with in my abilities (if we are racing I'll hang to you tighter than a tomato skin dinglebarry on a hairy ass so you will have to work for it) it isn't MY idea of fun group riding so I doubt I will be attending another. My time, my money. I get to choose where and how it goes.

If you do not like pictures you need to exit this post now, cause ima fittin to post a buttload.
If you do like pictures, well I hope you enjoy the ride.
These photos are not copyrighted, I posted in a public forum to share.

I racked up 1742 miles. I was hoping for 2K but this

Lead to this (if I had chosen to camp out and fix the problem on the road so close to home, the little bride would have handed my ass to me on a platter)

Back to the ride, on Friday

The two bikes on the left are not XS's but both the riders (from my limited understanding) are long time members and supporters of the 650 Society.
And "Shorty" Price is the one who organizes this ride so I've tried to include them in recognition of being part of the "group"

Yep that is us at the "tail of the Dragon"

We ran into some rain coming over the Dragon so that is pretty much it for pictures on Friday.
The rest of the day was spent just hanging out.

Well I have things to do, count calves, repair the washed out drive, laundry, oh and unload a broke scooter.
Tonight I'll try to get up some photos from Saturday.

Thanks for the kind words, Dan, but there's not one thing I could possibly teach you about riding a motorcycle and precious little I could teach you about fixing one! I hope you don't give up on Society rallies. Camden set a pace that I'd have considered moderate even 2 years ago, but it challenged me this time; I'm feeling the years. As Doug and Richard showed, it's fine to show up to hang with friends a bit, then form your own small group to go your own way at your own pace. If you attend again that's just what we'll do; set an easy cruising pace, go wherever, stop whenever, and take in the sights.

BTW, how did you come to spot that chain trouble before it did a complete comealoose? Good job!

There's gonna be a seriously nasty mess here. This is no joke: people are being advised to pack their cars with survival kits (water, food, etc.) to get them through the anticipated traffic backups. You do not want to get anywhere near that kind of mess on an air cooled motorcycle unless it's one that will let you leave the road and go through the woods. We're on notice that cellular and online communications will probably go down due to hordes of morons trying to stream pictures. Oh yeah, here's the real clincher: the greedheads on the Chamber of Commerce talked the Carbondale City Council into suspending the open carry ordinance for 3 days. That means crazed tourists roaming the streets while they pound booze, and half the muggers in Chicago, St. Louis, and points between are probably planning a Carbondale visit.
