Gggary's carburetor mod

So I purchased on of these and found out real quick it wouldn't work with my BS34 carbs. So instead of giving up I took it to a bench grinder and removed about half the diameter. Still bigger than the stock screw but small enough clear the side of the carb and to get my fingers with gloves on it. I finished it up by filing a groove into one side so as I turned it I would point like a hand on a clock (so I had a reference for position of the screw). This worked pretty well and was much quicker and easier than trying to machine one of my own.

also I had no idea that the outer ring of these thumb screws was made of brass. I was surprised to find gold colored shavings on my gloves when I was done.

OK - goofy thing here. I got those TX750 idle adjust thumbwheel doo-hickeys and tried one in my '76 which has (I am pretty sure) the stock 38 mm carbs - and it isn't even a close fit.

Dang! I guess I'll have to make one.

Hoping it will fit on the 34 mm carbs on the '81 Special II (it has 34 mm carbs) that I bought from Lakeview last week.....

Got mine put on yesterday. Beautiful! Looks like it came that way from the factory. Thanks for the idea gggGary!

I just slip a dollar bill under the idle adjust screw and pull it out when the engine is warmed up. On really cold mornings, I fold the dollar bill to get twice the thickness.

EXACTLY - that is why your name is MailMAN and mine is MAXimumPete.

Men always should do more than is required, more than the minimum, and if at all possible, more than makes sense! :D THAT is one of the many things that makes us different from (but not necessarily better than) women.

.....besides, I'm Canadian and we haven't had dollar bills here for 20 years or more and I am NOT going to risk dropping one of our pretty blue Wilfrid Laurier $5s while whizzing along Huron Church Road jousting with the 17,000 (really!!) trucks per day that go over the Ambassador Bridge to our friends to the north (really!!!) in Detroit.

....at least until the wall goes up....

It won't work on the 34's.
Do you have a picture of the 38's it doesn't work on?

Yup. - see attached. The idle adjust screw thread on my '76 carb is much larger than the TX750 screw.

I think someone stripped out your original, then drilled it out larger and re-tapped it.

Well, sh!t....that would go along with many other things I've found on this bike.

I bought this bike (a French Red 1976 XS650C survivor) from a good friend who is a fellow XS650 enthusiast and very knowledgeable. He had bought it as a barn-find to restore but hadn't yet done any work on it. So I got it in the same shape in which he had received it from the PO - still as a barn find - complete with hay and manure stuck on it here and there.

Anyhow, aside from several other pieces of mechanical butchery I have found in getting it running and riding, the PO had tried to rig-up running lights fore and aft - using solid copper house wire () and Marrette twist-on connectors () along with badly butchered sockets on the turn signal. stalks. Sooo....finding that the carbs have been "enhanced" is not a huge surprise.

Nonetheless, I have thoroughly enjoyed the bike and it now runs and rides great - so I'm just going to continue to fix these little doo-doos as I find them.

Remember - that which does not kill you - makes you stronger.

Was tinkering in the garage today and thought of something along this line. I have lots of bicycles around the house so i "borrowed " a brake adjuster from one, cut off the threads and drilled it to fit. It's snug but could use a little epoxy to keep it there. Same thing could be done with a clutch adjustment screw from a clutch lever.

Thanks folks - I will check it out and see what's what with the carbs.

Cheers,

Pete

I may try these bicycle valve stem adapters .....

Drill the hole out a little, cut the threaded portion off, and press onto the idle screw head. Not as large as the TX750 screw head but the knurling should improve the grip. And the price is right, less than 20 cents each .....

Just ordered my set of 10 of these nifty items from China; looking forward to this mini winter project. I'll post the results. Thanks 5Twins.

This is the result of using the BS38 compatable screw on my BS34 carbs.

I had to use a bench grinder to grind down the diameter to something small enough to clear the carb body but still bigger than the small original screw head.

I also used a small file to make a notch at one end for position reference on the fly.

And even though the edges aren't knurled or anything it is still easy to turn even with my big touring gloves on.

Good job, guys. OK, my turn.

FYI, the idle screws are M5 x 0.5mm fine pitch, with an 8mm head.

Dig thru a pile of WW2-era instrument knobs, find a matched pair.
IdleScrewKnob01.jpg

They use setscrews.
Drill out to 8mm, trim off the excess.

Install on carbs.

Since they're using setscrews, they can be slipped onto and off of the idle screws, without removing the idle screws, and without permanent alteration to the bike.

I guess I could put 'cheater' marks on them, later...
