Im sure this has been beaten to death but I can't find it so here goes the short version. The race mated to the upper bearing is 7/16 thick while the race matted to the lower bearing is 3/8. Question, is the top 7/16 race suppose to stick out the top of the neck as far as it does? I know its not much but the 3/8 race would seem to come closer to fitting flush with the top of the neck. They are part number 28-2009

good pics everything makes sense now except my bike did not have a lower bearing seal. mine is a79 special and had never been apart. is the seal something that was used on earlier or later models?

Yup - just would like to point out once again that a lot of the parts people need on our ol' bikes such as seals, bearings, nuts and bolts are used on MANY other models including some current models.

That means that when you go in and speak to the pimply-faced teenybopper behind the parts counter, you are not asking for a left-handed frammis seal - for 1976 Yamaha XS650C - you are asking for a frammis part for a 2013 Yamaha FJR or some other current or nearly current model.

To find out which parts are on a given model simply do the following:
- go to Partsfish.com
- select your year and model of Yamaha XS650
- find the relevant part and part number and hold your finger on the P/N (iPads) or right click it (PCs) and a new window will pop-up with a listing of all the bikes that used that same part.
- NOW, go to your dealer and see if he/she has the part in stock or can get it.
- ALTERNATIVELY, simply search for that part number (just enter the part number - only - in the search window) on eBay - you might be surprised to find how many NOS examples, are for sale, cheap - right now.

Cheers,

Pete

Hmmmmm...ok, something seems to have changed. Dang it!

I'll check into it and get back to you.

Gary - unless I have slipped my trolley, that doesn't seem to work any longer.

Dang it - that was a great feature/

Yeah, I use Partzilla to see the fiches, click on the Yamaha part number to see the other models and years that the part was used on. Yamaha parts fiches can be squirrely, you can see that in manuals too. Yamaha didn't share copy righted info as readily as Honda did.

Partsfish.com, huh? Thought I was missing out on some good place I never ran across before, but not so much. Dude, that place sucks, lol. Hard to navigate, retail price not given (so you have no idea if you're saving any money), poorly sized diagrams that only fully show themselves using a full screen. I remain a boats.net or partzilla fan.

And that also relates to the software a dealer has. Apparently, the dealer has to "buy into" software levels. Some dealers can only see parts fiche and part numbers, some can run a parts number query and tell you what models that part number was used on and then the Cadillac level will also have a parts locator telling you what dealerships have that part in stock. The dealer with that level of software is VERY handy if you are looking for parts NLA.
