Mikuni TM34 German Topham Setup

Slightly off topic, did you have the wide yokes made or are they off another bike? (Maybe one of the Suzuki cruisers?).

I need a set making for my street tracker but I'm not sure where is best to go in the UK?

Thanks,

Joe

I will have full rear mudguard and no front mudguard as i like the open front end. I wont be riding much in the rain lol...pretty much just for summer.
Brake rods just on a pivot and pulls rear drum brake lever like stock...seems to work fine? ( in my unexperienced opinion)
Yes seems to be the same consensus on the pipes, now wondering what to do with them to make tuning easier.
Hi Moonman,
yeah, I remember English summers, it only rains on weekends and Bank Holidays.
But no, not the brake rod from the wheel to the pivot arm, the long rod from the bottom of the pivot arm to the forward control brake pedal;
Surely that long skinny rod pushes, not pulls?

The first thing that strikes me is, the seat is very far back, but the bars and pegs are forward, that could balance the riders weight.

I mean, it might be too easy to wheelie.

Scott

I dont know if you are joking or not, seat setup was just where I felt comfortable sitting, Controls are staying but im moving to drag bars as they feel even better. Im not a bike designer or understand power to weight ratio/location...just welded it up as it felt good, please point out any life endangering errors I might have made :)

Ah yes sorry, I misunderstood...but that rod isnt skinny its actually quite thick and has the threaded ends with locknut to lengthen or shorten it. I see what you mean and went and had a look at it, if you saw it in person I think you would think it was actually ok and it doesnt flex at all.

Onto the carbs....TM34 setup arrived, was a tight fit but Its an absolutely lovely bit of kit.

Put them on and filled the bowls and off she went, question ( and I new to all of this ) I had 32mm PWK from Mikes Xs, it sounded ok....with these on the bike sounds like a race car....it idles much louder and crisper and when I rev it, muuucchhh louder?? More fuel and bigger airway 32mm vs 34mm ??

Hi Moonman,
was Scott joking?
Depends if you regard the bike's ability to do easy wheelies as a glitch or a feature, eh?
But I gotta advise you not to ride that bike before you've installed a rear mudguard.
The feet-forward riding position puts you at risk of bouncing off the seat if the bike hits a large
bump or pothole and if your arse lands on the rear tyre instead of a rear mudguard the tyre
will rip your nuts off.

Less fuel, Moonman, not more; remember what I told you about those Pukes? The needle jets are too fat and there's no way to change that. In spite of the accelerator pump, you'll see fuel consumption go down with the TM34's because they can be properly tuned. And I'll say it again: there is no such thing as a PWK32 and there never has been. Those are PWK28's bored out to 32 mm.

Posting this to help out Moon....
What's the smoke??

The RS produce higher velocities through the venturi effecting how the intake responds back to the vacuum pull on the jets . They're just a far superior set up. D porting the intake's will give identical results

Thanks guys...grizld is correct less fuel...but im trying to figure out how to tune these...pump needles jets etc...now i have a smoky bike when i rev it...didnt happen on the old carbs...only diff is when i installed these the acc stuck for 2 secs and revs jumped but not massively...thinking maybe rich mix is washing fuel of walls and blowing it out...its done 10miles since rebuild so im hoping rings valves etc are not leaking oil??

To resolve your issues, do six things. 1. Check oil for elevated level and/or smell of fuel. 2. Remove the carbs and stop riding the motorcycle. 3. Buy a manual from Topham for the TM pumpers, or the Sudco Mikuni Tuning Manual. 4. Check mixture screw position and post it. 5. Inspect float level. 6. Strip the carbs and post a complete jet list (don't do this before you have a manual in hand).
