Tach cable connection

I have a 1980, did I buy the wrong tachometer cable or am I missing a piece on the tach gear coming up from the side cover? There are no threads to connect the cable.

Yes, there should be a threaded sleeve there (part #4 below). It's a separate part and probably came out with the old cable when you removed it.
