Hi tfe1870,
yeah, some of MikesXS stuff lacks the quality one would hope for.
When my bike's glass tube fuse box quit I bought the neatest little 3-way mini-blade fuse holder from Scallywag303 who sold them on this list.
After I installed the 3-way plus a single that my Heritage needed Scallywag included a 4-way to his stock.
If he's still in business his 3-way or 4-way is the fuse holder I'd recommend.

The advice given on this Forum seems to be to automatically replace the old stock fuse box with a modern spade type fuse box. The reasoning is all very sound because the old boxes usually have broken/cracked connectors and the modern type make much better contact. But ..... I could not find a place that would accomodate the spade fuse box on my SH. The fit was too tight and the result looked very poor. So I bought an after market version of the original and it looks very tidy and fits perfectly. I assume the contacts will work perfectly for several years as did the original box when new. But some time in the future, probably when I am dead, the contacts will fail and someone will say "I told you so".

The XS650SH has very low clearance under the seat in the vicinity of the old fuse box. It also lacks the space around the airbox and battery to take the modern type. I could have fitted in 4 of those individual blade fuses but it just wouldn't look tidy.

As XSLeo so pointed out, round glass fuses suck. But I am stuck with them for now.

Round glass fuse suck. Up grade to modern flat blade fuses.
Leo
Hi Leo,
"suck" seems a touch harsh for the stock glass tube fuse block the XS650 came with.
The fuse block my Heritage Special left the factory with worked OK for over 30 years before it started acting up.
Mind you, it's highly unlikely that the MikesXS replacements would be anywhere near that good, even if they weren't wired up wrong.
So yes! Switching your XS650 to a flat blade fuse block ain't just another way to go, it's a true upgrade.

I checked and Scallywag303's last post was in 2016 (I think) - does anyone know if he is still active?

Pete

Does anyone know if those crimp fuse clips are available? I would like to get some just in case I live to 100! What would those crimp connectors be called?

Thank you for any help or suggestions.

.. had to replace the box on my 82'... got a auto store replacement.. think, $7.oo... took some time to find the solder gun.. heat shrink.. etc etc... but it fit well and works. Yup..old school glass fuse.. but all my bikes use them except for the Italian units.. they have some porcelain thing with a strip of wire.... got a few of them also.

Several years back I did the so-called "Radio Shack" fix on my '82 when the original clips started to fail - just transplanted the clips from the RS fuse holder into the OEM fusebox with a bit of soldering and everything fit just fine. Dunno if any Radio Shack stores are left anymore.

And some of the originals are still working just fine. Glass tube fuses also die of old age, even if the box is good put in new fuses. Don't forget; two spares in the cover clips.

I bought a 4-way blade box from a local place and put in the space behind the air filter box I assume used to hold the toolkit. Had to extend the wires of course and it's not pretty but it'll do for now. Two of the clips holding the glass fuses simply fell apart when touched them so I had to do something pronto!

Paul – Check out the end of post #27 (here). Vlad did a great job with his fuse box rebuild. He posted links to parts on the Digikey website. Note: Try switching the country on the website to your location and search for the same part numbers. You probably can avoid international shipping costs.
