Solved How to wire voltmeter to kick only xs650?

I am having trouble wiring a generic led voltmeter from ebay to my bike I tried plugging in a light brown wire and ground and it read 0, i tried wiring it directly to the positive and negative leads of sparx capacitor and it still read 0 even when it was idling. The voltmeter works because I tried it on a battery and it read its voltage. Not sure what it can be as there is only a postive and negative post, is it the resistance? I am running PMA w/ electronic ignition & e-advancer and no battery. Let me know if there is any suggestions. Thanks!

Your best bet will be to wire the positive side to the "out" terminal of the ignition switch and the negative to a convenient ground.
 
Could be that the voltmeter has a low tolerance to "noise". Set your multimeter to AC volts, and take a reading across the capacitor. Above 0.3v AC may be too much "noise". Best solution there is to run a battery...

Thanks all for the help, got the voltmeter to work with a battery wired parralel to the capacitor. Definitely needed the battery for the voltmeter to work. :bike:
 
You could try more capacitors in || too. Another thing, an analog meter will have some immunity to noise built in, since the needle has some inertia. Also, you are dealing with audio frequencies so you might try a passive low-pass speaker filter feeding the meter, the sharper the slope and the lower the cutoff the better. It would be one or more coils with an iron core combined with none or more physically small capacitors.

Put a mini battery inside the neck under the tank and wired the battery parallel to the sparx capacitor does the trick.
