What do you guys use for assembly oil? Regular oil or assembly lube? I was thinking assembly lube but was worried it contaminate the clutch.

What do you guys use (10-40 or 20-50) for break in oil and how long do you run it.

Thanks
Al

Al - no input from me but this is a question I have as well - looking forward to hearing the responses.

I use regular oil on most of the parts (pistons, rings, cylinders). The only place I use assembly lube is on the cam lobes. I usually squirt some oil in the top of the motor, in the bolt holes for the oil pipe banjo bolts, before I install them. I just use the normal 20-50 for initial start-up and break-in but change it pretty quick, in about 100 miles.

The only consensus you'll find is this: There's more than one way to skin a cat. Personal practice? I smear the cam lobes with assembly lube and install straight 30W nondetergent oil for the first 100 miles.

What is assembly lube? Is a there a specific name? Back in the 60's Big Daddy Don Garlits used STP oil treatment on all bearing surfaces. I would wonder if STP would affect our wet clutches though.
When I put the old 72 back on the road in 2013, I put 10-30 in it and changed it after about 5 miles. I thought that maybe light weight oil would clean out 25 years of stored sludge. It wasn't too bad when I pulled the bottom off a few months later. But still, there are too many nooks and crannies in the bottom case that collect sludge and particles. Eh?

I like the squirting down the tubes. I'll remember that! Do you use 20-50 synthetic or dinosaur?

I'm a "cheap oil" guy and just use dino oils, but change it frequently. For the last several years, that's been the Walmart brand.

Google "assembly lube" or "assembly oil" and you'll get lots of hits. It's sort of like a liquid grease that clings to parts like cam lobes but easily gets washed off and combines with the engine oil once it starts circulating. You don't use much so a tube will probably last you a lifetime. I've had mine longer than I can remember. This is the one I got, not for any particular reason other than it was what the local auto parts store had. But, I'll also mention that I am a fan of Sta-Lube products and was happy it was this brand .....

I've read oil is fine if you intend to start it up right away, and lube is better if it's going into storage.

Thanks for the link. With a little research, I found that Walmart oil might be made by Shell/Pensoil/Quakerstate. All good. Yes, I've been using Regular Castrol 20-50 from 1976 to 1989. Since 2013 I've been using that or Castrol hi-mileage 20-50, (part syn). Both are fairly cheap in the 5 qt. at Walmart. I also add some Rislo ZDDP additive. Note, the top end has over 60k miles on it. In a couple of weeks we'll see if the Castrol was worth it.

The counter guy in the auto department at my Walmart told me Mobile makes their oils. I guess it's not really important other than that it is one of the big name oil companies and Walmart simply puts their label on it.

I used Castrol GTX for years in all my vehicles as well. Years ago, you could buy cases of the stuff on sale all the time for $10 to $15. With the way oil prices shot up, I needed to find a cheaper alternative, and the Walmart stuff was it. In the 5 quart jugs, it's about $2.50 a quart.

Those were the good old days. Hey does any one remember the glass recycled oil containers with the metal funnel tops. Usually sold at the cheap, (no brand), gas stations? It looked blue through the glass. Back when the cheap gas was 27 cents/gallon. Hey it's still cheaper than orange juice.

I don't know how he would know that. Unless maybe the pallet says Mobile on it. I wonder what 20w-50 costs in China ?

Don't remember that but do remember the oil that you opened by jabbing a screwdriver in the lid. If you were fancy you'd acquired a spout that stuck in the lid (high-priced). Wonder why it took so long to put it in a plastic bottle.
