Nissin 14 Front Master Cylinder (1980)

Did I see somewhere that you can remove the plastic reservoir from this Master cylinder.

I wanted to strip it and paint for a rebuild.

Secondly the reservoir is discolored. Can it be cleaned up??

When you have the four screws out, grip it tightly and turn it either direction 90 degrees. But, no one has found a good source for the large oring that seals it together. You may be lucky and the oring will be fine. Mine was. Others not lucky.

If you do need a replacement o-ring, it is a standard JIS size. I just measured it up and ordered a package from an online o-ring supplier. If you need the size, let me know and I'll look tonight when I get home.

To cut to the chase, it takes a 39.7 x 3.5 o-ring. However, there is a lot of other good info in post #13 of the above thread.

That o-ring gets gunk BEHIND it just like the caliper seals. Twist a bit and get the plastic slightly separated from the metal, I'll use a putty knife to help if I have to, and dribble some brake fluid in the crack, a few more twists and it comes right out.

Yeah, to add to what gggGary just said, once you get the reservoir off you'll understand why it was so hard. The plastic reservoir is sort of like a bayonet/mushroom-head push-fit into the M/C body. I also use a putty knife -- a thick, stiff one with about zero flex -- and a LOT of force. I may have to start with a thin putty knife, and then go up to the stiff one. Be bold, you aren't going to damage anything.
