Great paint job Bob...with that said, you have upped my prep. for painting with rattle cans. I only use 400 wet and prime and paint. I thought my paint jobs came out good.....guess it's time for an eye exam.;)

What can I say, as Jim noted earlier , automotive refinishing was part of my job description in my life BTPO ( Before The Post Office ) old habits die hard. As in most things in life, preparation is everything. :D

Paint looks good on the engine.

Thank you sir!

Those look very nice indeed! I wouldn’t have known those were spray can paint jobs if you hadn’t told me. Really nice. You know I did all that prep work, but you remember that sample I did on an old fork leg? All I did to that was wet sand it with 400 grit and soap and water, wipe it off and shoot it. It looks just as nice as my engine! :D

Dang - those are very pretty bikes Mr. B!!

Well I’m edging up on the engine build. I went through all my inventory today to make sure I have everything I need on hand and ready to go. Hopefully next week I’ll have built up my nerve enough to just plow right into it.
First I went through all my gaskets and o-rings.

Then I went through my pistons and rings ( I checked the rig gaps a couple days ago BEAUTIFUL) filters, brass and copper washers, sealants, new valve adjusters, cam chain, cam chain guide, spark plugs etc.

I went through all my parts, and hardware and checked that they had been cleaned and are ready to go.
I did order , what I hope to be the final parts for my engine today. One of my acorn head nuts had some funky threads, so I ordered a couple of those. And I ordered a set os stainless sidecover bolts because I had a couple that were badly corroded. A new gasket for the dipstick and somehow ,Mister Meticulous here ,managed to misplace those two chrome cam chain nuts that bolt to the front of the cylinder.

Man I turned that garage inside out looking for them. I don’t know what happened to them, so I also ordered a set of them.
You have to know how that’s driving me crazy. I photograph, clean , tag and bag EVERYTHING! So now that I ordered replacements , I’m sure I’ll find them.

This week I will re install my rockers, with new o - rings and tappet adjusters so it will be all ready to go.

And finally , just a bit of fun. My bike had the original dealership sticker on the tail light housing, I was hoping to save it but it is too deteriorated, so I had a replacement made , not an exact replica but just to keep the spirit of its origins intact. It’s the same dimensions.

Nice dealership decal detail Bob. When I bought my 78E, BB, the PO said " you XS650 guys are sure weird about your original dealer decals".....lol.

Ah man, you're gonna lose points for this one Bob .... ;)

Anxiously waiting your reassembly posts!

Bob, ditch the valve cover gaskets. Contact @gggGary for a set of his super duper o-rings.
Re those cam chain guide bushings.... 2many said there's been cases of Mikes being too long... pushing the guide too far into the chain cavity. When you get 'em, post up here the length and I'll measure a set I have and we'll see if they're correct.

Thanks for the tip Jim! I’ll check them out. As for the o- rings , do those only fit later models? I can’t remember if those o- rings fit an a machined groove in the valve cover or not. My valve covers have flat surfaces.

Yeah.... you need the grooved covers for the o-rings.

Ya, that's a good point Bob. My TX has gaskets, not o-rings and no machined groove for an o-ring like on my 77 and 78.

Ah well, if you don’t have oil weeping on your motorcycle engine , you’re just not riding it enough! Haha! :laugh2:
