Yea correct. It is the first year of the 447 engines, I think a lot of confusion is because of the TX prefix, 73 TX650 but 74 TX650A.

Basically the same engine internals till 84, the end of production. The tension-er changed. as you seem to know and the ignition from 80 on

Can anyone help me out here? Just bought what I was told is a 82 xs 650. I looked up the vin and it has 16 digits on the neck. Can anyone help me identify what's correct so I can get this thing registered?

I checked it out but still confused. The numbers on the neck are A4R3001BA001224, the engine stamp is 2F0- 157547, can you point me in the right direction?

Hey cole b, it looks like your engine is a '78/'79 and the numbers you give for the neck don't exist in the xs650's.
How about a new thread, like an introduction and some pics? Maybe your frame is another animal altogether? Some pics might help.

Sorry Cole but as nj1639 says it looks like you've bought a bike with a non Yamaha frame.
Still looking on the bright side you've got one of the very best engines of the period available , strong, powerful and virtually unburstable.
See if you can upload some pictures for us .....someone is bound to know what frame you have.

The bike is chopped up. But has yamaha forks, wheels and disc brake setup.

You may have a stolen, recovered, auctioned frame. Common practice for police auctions, when original VIN has been ground off, and they do a "Reassigned VIN number".

I think I see remnants of the original VIN behind your strange VIN.
ColeB-frame02.jpg

You should be able to see raised edges on the letters/numbers of your reassigned VIN, indicating that it was stamped AFTER that area was ground down.

Your frame appears to be an XS650 frame. The remnants of the passenger footpeg bracket shows that this would have been a 'special' frame.

Thanks. I'm guessing my best bet is finding another frame. I don't have a title to this bike so I'm not sure I'd be able to even register it at this point

well spotted hawkeye !;)

i did see the bracket and thought mmmm................. but I have absolutely no knowledge or experience of frames from other manufacturers of the period and I couldn't think of any reason why the frame would have a non-Yamaha Vin.
I also didn't spot the other stamping beneath either ............but it didn't evade your forensic scrutiny 2M :)

Hey all, New to the forum. Ive just picked up a 79’ 650F. Title and frame numbers match but engine is a different number, Both neck and engine are 2F0 numbers except the last six digits are off. This bike is really clean with (almost) all original parts and only 4679 miles!
The condition matches the bike but i am wondering why the different engine number and also could i run into any registration issues? Im in Oregon if that matters. Thanks

.Welcome snoosky, Pics pics and more pics or we don't believe you:). Pics also help those, that know these bikes inside out, if the bike has had parts swapped from model to model. If the motor has been changed often other parts as well.......or not.

Can't help with the registration info, but on the 2F0 code........6 models had 2F0.......78E..78SE...79F..79SF..79SII........and 80SG. Post the first 3 numbers if you don't want to post the whole 6. There was a change in the ignition system in 80 so if you motor is an 80 the PO may have swapped in the ignition as well. Also will help us help you if you have charging issues due to some minor differences.

Carbs changed in 80, ID'ing and asking questions before doing any buying is a must.

More info if and when required.

Should be no problem on registration frame number is what counts. A lot of water under the bridge in 40 years, if only they could talk!
It's often easier to swap in a good motor from another bike than repair.

Looks good! Do a head stud retorque. Lots of "changed " parts on fork, handle bars etc. may not be original speedo............ Like said lots of ??? over 40 years.

Recently had "the mutt" through here; all low miles 79 special parts on a restamped 76 frame, That bike had a back story, LOL.

Does look nice and original except for the Lower handlebars and they will make for better riding............. 79SF Frame and 79SF motor, both from the same model/year. These bikes came from the Factory with matching engine and frame no's.

So, what if there are no numbers on the neck?

...and how do you post pictures?
I had to remove the headlight to see the number stamped into the neck a bit lower than I expected. The DMV (California) did not believe that the Serial number on the engine case and the neck were the same and that they are also the Vin. I have to get the CHP to help straighten it out.
