XS650 No Theme Build

Great minds think alike? I chopped my frame in about the same place.

This is the shock I was thinking about using. I`ve been looking on eBait and swing arms are dirt cheap (if it doesn`t say Radian on it anywhere) but I`m trying to use up all the parts I have left over from the last 3 builds and really would like to keep the cost under $800 not counting the parts I already have. I`m not really up for making spacers, chain clearance etc. Giving this one my best shot at keeping it simple.

Heat index of only 107 today. Seemed like a good time to smooth out the tab removal and not mow the yard. I`ll mow it tomorrow when it`s 114 index instead. Build is moving like a snail in this heat.

I hear you brother! Here in Phoenix the actual temperature is 110 degrees and breezy. The only benefit is we have super low humidity, so instead of sweating to death we just kinda look like dried figs.

G'day Bob,

You are so lucky to have dry heat.

Man here in the tropics during our wet season it may be 100+ and over 90% humidity.

Doug/Skull can confirm this.

I have heard that hell is a dry heat so perhaps you may feel at home one day, lol.

Arctic Blast!! Polar Vortex?? Whatever, it only got to 98 degrees today so I got a little done on the build. I`m waiting on a Dog Bone for the linkage so I can start on the mono shock. Can`t be that hard I mean it`s just a spring with a hole on each end RIGHT??

Mounting tabs made and all welded up (monoshock part that is). Going in for upper dental implants tomorrow so I thought I`d better finish this first. A public ass kicking would be easier and much cheaper. 9 months now when this all heals completely I`m going t buy a 100 lb bag of pistachio nuts and eat every one.:D

IMHO the mag wheels stink out loud. However I`ve already set the suspension to the 16" rear wheel and the mags do have brand new tires. They look like S#*t on the bike and great on my budget. I was thinking there was 1 year that used a 16" alloy rear wire spoke wheel. If that is true I would change them both if I could find one.
Seat and Tank are next?

Yep, you can get a 16" spoked rear. There was one for sale on here not too long ago, but the hub was cut out.

I have grown to like the mags, although I like them much better as a one-solid-color wheel than when they were "2-tone".

After seeing Jim`s "Start Up" I finally got my ass in gear and did something on my No Theme Build for a change. I made a (functional I hope) swing arm brace, installed new brass bushings and made a gas tank mount. The brace has good clearance for the chain and dog bone but I`m going to use a 520 with 16-36 sprockets. It looks like the center stand will work too but I may not use it. I know I said in another thread that I was not going to use a new tank and seat but I miss poke. No, wait, that was my prom date:yikes:. I just flat out lied! I`m trying to get as much open wheel look as possible. Not planning to use the drum brake though. Tonight I`ll start on the seat rails and frame braces. I`d like to get this to the powder coater by the 1st week of Sept.

Today I made the frame for the Champion seat. I still have to make some supports and notch the front tubes for the final fit. Probably finish this up tomorrow and move on to the center brace and upper motor mount. Thinking seriously about new triple trees. Maybe inverted forks??

Got these seat rail uprights made today. they had to be angled inward and sit vertical to clear the seat. Between all the phone calls, text messages, girl friends BS, and countless interruptions it only took 7 hrs:shrug:.

Last night I drew up templates for the frame gussets, transferred them to 14ga sheet metal, punched holes, drilled them in the different sizes, chamfered the edges then cut them out on the band saw and tack welded them in place. I still have to make a lower center brace and new upper motor mounts. (more room to install and remove the motor) I`m really getting burnt out on this frame & swing arm. Probably should rename this thread the "monkey spank build"??
