Mooneyes Moon Discs - anyone tried them?

I have been saving up for those too, I even bought a rear mag to make it easier to mount, but have decided to try it on a spoke wheel instead. I think they look pretty rad too. this one was done on a mag wheel, which are the car hubcaps adapted to fit.

EDIT: I didnt notice that they made these for bikes now, but yeah they are pricey.

According to the old H-D crowd(they used to be an option way back when), the bike gets blown sideways in crosswinds. Even the newer models with the solid aluminum wheels are that way. That's on a heavy bike. I imagine it'd be worse on an XS.
 
They look cool but as stated above a good cross wind or sudden gust can push you into the next lane of traffic. I had a 97 fat boy with solid aluminum wheels and it was a constant battle to keep it straight in the wind.
 
145.00 Yeah you can find fat boy rims for less than that. Mounting fat boy rims to an XS may end up costing a bunch though.

Me and "Falstaff" a 90 Fatboy pictured below did 13 years, 5 coast to coast US round trips, 157,000 miles including 6 Sturgis "Wyoming Wind" runs with & without windshields, rack & bags and never noticed a single problem of the sort you mention. Moreover, those were the best, truest, most problem free wheels that ever spun under my big old fat butt. Did have some tracking problems... fixed once I went to Progressive Suspension rear shocks and progressive front fork springs. Not a big fan of the "Softail" suspension for other than looks though.

My old VRSC. 620lbs. Some people say the 'wind will blow around a solid wheel bike' is BS. I did feel the wind when riding across the flat lands of NJ on windy days - moreso than my mag and spoke bikes. Once I learned how to ride the bike I was fine....no big deal at all. I also think the only wheel that it would effect is the front....which you will prob have as a spoke or mag anyways.

I don´t know how it´s overseas but IKEA.....at least DID sell a sort of fruitplate who has the same shape and size as the disc showing at "Jamesgs4" pic.

I´ve been reading about custom-car builder here i Sweden buying them like crazy!!
It may be worth cheking it out!

i saw a guy on TCU used pizza pans from wally world and it looked cool and I'm sure it cost alot less ! As for balancing issues, just use dyna beads and you should be fine. I use 'em in my stock mag wheels om my sportster and they've been great, even at speeds in excess of 100 mph .
 
I've also been thinking of doing something similar on a different build. All of the moto moon disc I see are 16" though. I'de rather do 18s. And what about the ID for the hub/ brakes.

It'll help to keep the front open. You can see examples of this sorta thing on track bicycles, their rear wheels are dished for aerodynamics while their fronts are open. This is more so for direction changes (steering), but same idea

A fat boy wheel??????!!!! have you ever lifted on of those piggy wheels? i don't know if an XS would spin that.:laugh: why not just build the whole bike out of cast iron ahahah

I like that bike a lot too. Looks to have a bolt on hard tail..?Zero stretch and no rake I believe

There's no such thing as a "bolt-on" hardtail for the XS. The factory tail section would have to be bolted on for this to be possible. I do believe you're right about the no stretch/no rake though

Yeah it's definitely welded on. They are still using the stock foot peg mounts and you can see where that is welded to the hardtail. I think the bolt you can see by the rear of the tank is for the seat hinge.
 
I know you can't just bolt on a hardtail, BUT that is a bolt on hardtail. Go to the website and look closely at the pics.

IIRC, they cut off the stock rear section and fabricated a true "bolt on" rigid section. In an interview they said that it is completely removable.
 
Ya, I noticed it in the pics if you blow them up. A lot of work. And it was done very well. A bunch of machining I'de bet. This is one of my favorite xs's
