XS650 No Theme Build

Thanks Pete. This is certainly not my "A Game" by any means but it will have to do. I already have ideas for another build and don`t even have the frame for this one finished yet.

Didn`t do much today (too many interruptions). I did finish up the upper motor mount and relocate the brake stay bracket to eliminate the rear drum mag and go to disc.

Spent the entire day Boxing the Bishop on these saddle washers. Need these to mount my left over skid plate. This is the last thing to do before the powder coat/ I think.

Jim. Here are a couple of pics of some of the air cleaner "Crap". There is also something with a little door?

Hi halfmile,
I can tell you about the "something with a little door" because my Heritage Special also has one.
It's a container for the factory-supplied security chain that uses the bike's ignition key to work it's lock.
Most likely the chain itself was long gone or you'd have wet yourself laughing at it.
The chain is more suitably sized to be a dog leash than a bike security chain.
So long as the dog don't weigh more than 20 lbs.

Thanks. I had no idea what that was. Maybe they should have used security "String". I gave all the stuff to Jim anyway.

Got the saddle washers installed on the frame and the lifting spool and brake stay brackets welded on the swing arm. I might put the powder coat on hold until I make the exhaust system (TT Pipes) in case I need to weld some more tabs. Hoos makes nice ones but I don`t know if they`re long enough to clear the skid plate. I didn`t like the skid plate in the first place but since this build has no theme I need to use up as many spare parts as I can. Easily removed however?

Thanks 59Tebo. I`m just a simple lottery win away from wrapping this build up. It seems my "Budget" build has gone to Hell in a Hand Basket! Did last a little longer than usual though.

Got a few min to work on the no theme build. Mounted the Chinky MC and made simple stop & return spring. That was the only simple thing because drilling the holes and tapping the threads turned out to be a giant PITA. Just wasn`t long enough:yikes:. (regular length drill bits that is). Thank God for Boeing Air Craft Surplus bits. Awkward to get the right angle for a straight push but it works great. So much for that Sept 1st powder coat .

Deja vu?? Seems like I`ve done this before! Spent the last 2 days dressing up the substandard factory welds and removing all the slag and spatters and sandblasted the frame and swing arm ready for powder coat. Only a month behind schedule.

Started the process of drilling the wheels. First I made a template for the outer rim on the rear wheel. Drilled 60 2mm holes, 60 3mm holes, 60 4mm holes and 14 6mm holes. Will smooth out the chamfer tomorrow and make a template for the spokes and drill them. Then the front.

I'm guessin' you don't need my rear wheel then?
Btw... looks good:thumbsup:

I don`t know if I like these or not so don`t count me out yet. Now I have to make the front match the rear. When they`re done I`ll take a close look and believe it or not I have been known to change my mind. (usually everyday)?:shootme:

Did you happen to weigh them, before & after to determine how much weight was lost by making them "holey"? I saw pictures of the perimeter holes in a "rain gutter" spoked rim. I thought it was very cool, but not necessarily practical/functional. Just another small detail that raises the overall 'custom-ness' level of the whole build. But, as Hugh (HHB) once said "...less weight equals free speed!..." :bike:
