So I'm looking to get rid of some of the extra electrical components and wanted to go to a combination reg/rec (I also already know that I can get a separate reg and rec for cheap on ebay and what-not). I have a stock charging system so I started to google and this was something I found that intrigued me (mostly because of the price)....

What I'm wondering is could this be used as an equivalent to the Mikexs reg/rec combo? Has anyone else used this replacement? I seems like all of the wires are there that you'd need to hook it up I think.

Thoughts???

The listed part shows to fit a range of years that used two different (incompatible) regulators, what are the odds it will work for you?
Pretty sure that is for later 80-83 charging systems. So it could be used but requires substantial rewiring of your set up.
The reported track record for cheap regulators has been poor to awful. A price drop from $89 to $29 is not an indicator of good quality.

Yeah I hear you. I figured I’d just ask in case this could be a viable option for myself and others and to see if anyone has ever used this with success.

On a separate note, I’m also curious too as to where people are mounting their separate regulators and rectifiers after hardtailing a bike to keep the elements off of their regs and recs while riding.

Hey Gary I was also searching through some threads about the combined reg/rec from mikesxs and notice you had a thread where you had one and were hooking one of them up. How has it worked for you? Any issues?

If I did, I no longer remember what bike it was or how it worked out, sorry,
I have several brand new mikes rec/regs sitting in the bins.

Regulators and rectifiers, especially rectifiers, get hot in operation and need cooling air. In other words, don't put them inside a sealed up "fake" oil tank or electrics box.

No experience but did notice on that same site they list this one:
http://www.madhornets.com/regulator...j600-fz600-yx600-xs650-xs400-70s-80s-yhc-106/

And that one is claimed to work on XS650's

If you can’t enclose them because of heat (which I figured) where do people mount them on bobbers and such when they hardtail? The stock rec was under the battery box and the stock reg was behind the side cover by the seat. With the back half chopped and hard tailed, I’m curious as to what people do to protect the reg and rec with still getting proper air flow for cooling?

That's the same one, lol.
I did not look at the part numbers just the descriptions of what they fit!

And I might be a little upset about who ever started this thread about a reg/rec.

I Just came home from a 60 mile ride on my Sportster and went to restart it after I was in garage and not enough power in the battery to even try to crank it over. I'm too tired right now to do any trouble shooting but suspect it may be a problem with the regulator as the battery is only a couple months old, then again it could be a bad stator or wiring time will tell!

I was waiting for that response. Lol It has been solved but I’m stripping the bike down and hardtailing it. So in an attempt to save space and turn two components into one, I was curious as to whether this could potentially be a $30 option vs $100 at Mikesxs.

I specifically mentioned post #45 because that post has the information relating to the differences between the 70-79 SS reg/Rect and the 80-84 SS Reg/rect........That answers the question "is this reg/rect for my bike"

My bad Skull, I didn't see that. Thanks.
